Now Hiring | Principal Java Software Engineer (AWS | Oracle | Enterprise Applications) Location: Canberra, ACT (Hybrid) Contract: 12 Months + 2 x 12-Month Extension Options Hybrid Working (Regular work-from-home available) Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance We are seeking an experienced Principal Java Software Engineer to join a highly skilled development team supporting and enhancing a mission-critical enterprise application that plays a vital role in Australia’s maritime and aviation search and rescue operations. This is a unique opportunity to work on a life-critical platform responsible for coordinating emergency response activities and supporting operational decision-making across maritime and aviation incidents. Working within a collaborative team of experienced Java and .NET specialists, you’ll contribute to the ongoing development, maintenance, and optimisation of enterprise backend systems, cloud integrations, and modern API services. Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Principal Java Software Engineer, you will: Design, develop, maintain, and enhance enterprise-grade Java applications supporting mission-critical operational systems.Develop and maintain backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and enterprise Java technologies.Design and implement scalable RESTful APIs, SOAP web services, and integration solutions.Develop and maintain cloud-based integrations using Amazon Web Services (AWS).Design logical and physical data models and implement database solutions using Oracle Database.Develop robust data access layers using JPA, Hibernate ORM, and object-relational mapping frameworks.Build and maintain modern web interfaces using ReactJS, HTML, and CSS where required.Produce technical design documentation, solution specifications, and implementation artefacts.Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Git, Maven, and Ant.Participate in software releases, production deployments, and continuous improvement initiatives.Contribute to automated testing, code reviews, and software quality assurance.Provide technical advice and support to internal stakeholders while contributing to architectural decisions.Participate in an on-call support roster (rare after-hours callouts). Key Skills & ExperienceWe’re looking for an experienced enterprise software engineer with strong backend Java expertise and cloud development experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Extensive experience developing enterprise applications using Java and modern Java frameworks.Strong experience with Spring, Spring Boot, JPA, Hibernate ORM, and enterprise design patterns.Experience developing RESTful APIs, SOAP Web Services, OpenAPI, XML, JSON, WSDL, and XSD.Strong experience working with Oracle Database, including data modelling, stored procedures, and database optimisation.Hands-on experience developing and deploying cloud-native solutions using Amazon Web Services (AWS), including services such as EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SQS, and CloudFormation.Experience with Unix/Linux, Bash scripting, and enterprise application deployments.Strong understanding of CI/CD, version control, build automation, and release management using Git, Jenkins, Maven, and Ant.Experience implementing automated testing and following modern software engineering best practices.Excellent communication, technical documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills. Highly DesirableExperience with: Reactive programmingJava EE / Jakarta EEEnterprise integration and message processingAWS cloud architectureMission-critical or highly available enterprise applicationsOracle PL/SQLReactJS frontend development QualificationsRelevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.Demonstrated experience delivering robust, maintainable enterprise software within complex project environments.
