Description

About The Company Verto Health is a health technology company solving healthcare’s most complex data fragmentation and interoperability challenges. Our patented, AI-enabled platform ingests structured and unstructured clinical data across disparate EHRs, claims, and payer systems to create a unified, actionable view of patient populations. We empower health systems and value-based care organizations across North America to master population health by translating hidden clinical insights into personalized patient journeys, automated workflows, and accurate risk adjustments. By bridging the gap between raw data and coordinated action, Verto enables healthcare providers to reduce manual overhead, optimize operational efficiency, and deliver proactive, data-driven care at scale. About The Role Verto builds software that takes on some of the most stubborn inefficiencies in healthcare, and it is only worth what we can get live in the health systems we serve, reliably and at scale. As Senior Engineering Manager, Software, you own that side of the work. You will build and lead the engineering team, set the bar for what good looks like, and own what goes to production. A big part of the job is our NLP pipelines, which turn messy unstructured clinical data into structured data and are a large part of why customers choose us. You will keep that work moving forward while raising how much the whole team gets out of AI, both the engineers and the people working alongside them. You are comfortable taking a vague business goal and turning it into something the team can build, usually without a map to follow. You report to the CIO and work closely with Product and with our Data & AI leadership, who set product direction and own the data models while you decide how things get engineered and shipped. What You’ll Do Engineering Leadership & Team Development Build, grow, and lead the engineering team, set the technical bar, and own what ships to productionDevelop the next set of technical leads, and run hiring, onboarding, and the co-op program end to endKeep delivery predictable by managing to outcomes and sprint completion rather than story points, and protect the team from churn and micromanagement Technical Strategy, NLP & AI Own the roadmap for our NLP pipelines, working a steady loop of better quality, then lower cost, then faster inferenceBring infrastructure cost and inference time down by evaluating serverless and edge options, and own cloud and tooling vendor decisionsGet the team using frontier AI coding tools every day, and set up ways for non-technical colleagues to contribute through AI Architecture, Delivery & Technical Debt Run the Architecture Review Board and make the big system-design calls, setting clear boundaries and strong observabilityProtect a standing buffer for tech debt and research, and keep the codebase and internal tooling healthyOwn estimates and scoping for new work, keeping scope simple and being clear up front about whether something is product or custom Cross-Functional, Client & Compliance Partner with Product and Data & AI to turn clinical and business needs into solid backend workOwn data ingestion and integration work for enterprise clients, and step into client technical conversations and data work when neededManage shared delivery timelines, raise risks early with a plan to resolve them, and keep compliance reporting (such as SR&ED and IRAP) on track Resource & Budget Management Own the budget for AI tooling, cloud, and R&D, and match people to the priorities that matter mostTrack who is working on what across projects, flag budget issues early, and help build the annual plan for your area Where You'll Work This is a remote-first role open to candidates located anywhere in OntarioWe hold dev days at our downtown Toronto office at least once per month, which all team members attend in personOutside of dev days, the office is yours to use as often as you'd like What You Bring Knowledge & Experience 6+ years of engineering experience with at least 2 years of leadership experience recently leading and growing agile engineering teams, respected as both an engineer and a managerPrior working experience in a product-led tech company is highly valuedHands-on across a modern stack (Python, Ruby, JavaScript/TypeScript) and frameworks (Rails, Flask, Angular, Vue.js)Solid command of Linux, Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD, with experience tuning real infrastructure on a major cloud (Azure, AWS, or Cloudflare)Experience putting Generative AI into products and running NLP, machine learning, or analytics pipelines, plus daily use of AI development toolsComfortable across multi-database setups (PostgreSQL, Clickhouse, Elasticsearch, Redis)A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field How You Work A strong communicator who can align a room on a complex system and explain it just as well to people who are not engineersA genuine collaborator who works shoulder to shoulder with the team and across functions, and is at ease finding the simplest workable route through a messy problem What Success Looks Like Predictable delivery: Delivery is predictable: sprints land where you said they would and enterprise work ships on time, with risks raised earlyA stronger platform: The NLP pipeline keeps getting better while cost and inference time per note keep coming downReal AI leverage: AI tools are widely adopted across the team, and more gets shipped because of itA team that scales: The team is healthy and growing, with strong technical leads coming up and a co-op program that pulls its weight Why Verto Opportunity to see your code deployed in hospitals and clinics across CanadaWork with a cross-functional team of healthcare professionals and technologistsGenerous professional development support and flexible work optionsOptional hybrid team with strong culture of collaboration and growth Compensation The salary range for this role is $150,000 to $200,000 CAD per year, depending on experience, skills, and alignment with the role.
