Description

The ocean covers 70% of the planet, yet we understand it less than we understand the moon. Seascape is closing that gap. We turn satellite radar imagery into precise intelligence on sea conditions, maritime activity and environmental change, and we build the hardware that helps search and rescue teams find people lost at sea. We're looking for a software engineer to join our Auckland engineering team and help build the systems behind that work. The role Support our R&D team to take new features and implement them in productionSupport our product development team to operationalise our codebaseWrite meaningful tests and help maintain good Git hygiene across branching, pull requests and code reviewHelp keep our codebase clean and readable, including for non-engineering team membersLearn geospatial, remote-sensing and machine learning concepts as you go, even if they're new to youCollaborate daily with a globally distributed team What you'll bring A degree in Computer Science or a related field2+ years' experience in a small or mid-sized engineering team using AgilePython, and ideally at least one other language (e.g. TypeScript, C++ or Rust)Confidence with version control, testing, code review and core software concepts (data structures, APIs, error handling, dependency management)Comfortable on the command line in a Linux/Unix environmentSome experience with AWS or another cloud platformA basic understanding of containerisation (Docker) and CI/CD (GitHub Actions or similar)Clear written and verbal communicationThe ability to read, understand and refactor code written by others Nice to have Experience bridging research and production teamsExposure to geospatial or earth observation tools such as GeoTIFF, Zarr, STAC, rasterio or PostGIS Why join us Work directly with a world-class team, including former spacecraft operators, radar scientists and patent-holding inventorsGet hands-on mentorship as you build your careerJoin a fast-growing company at an early stage, where your work shapes the product and your input carries weightHelp solve a hard problem that matters: giving the world a clearer, more precise view of its oceans We know great engineers come from all sorts of backgrounds and career paths.
