Senior Java Software Engineer

We are searching for a Senior Java Software Engineer to join an established, top-tier algorithmic trading firm in Amsterdam. This is a role for an engineer who thrives in fast-paced trading environments, building high-performance, business-critical systems where software directly impacts trading performance and commercial outcomes. You'll work alongside traders, quantitative researchers and fellow software engineers, designing and building the technology that powers electronic trading across global financial markets. What you'll be working on Depending on the team, your work may include: Building and enhancing electronic trading systems and execution servicesDeveloping real-time trading applications used by traders and quantitative researchersDesigning market data, pricing, order management and execution componentsOptimising latency-sensitive services and distributed trading infrastructureBuilding simulation, backtesting and market replay platformsDeveloping risk management, position monitoring and exposure systemsAutomating trade lifecycle and post-trade workflowsBuilding internal developer tooling that improves testing, deployment and operational efficiency Key responsibilities Design, build, test, deploy and maintain Java applications that support electronic trading and trading operationsWork closely with traders, quants and researchers to translate trading ideas and business requirements into production-ready softwareOwn features end-to-end, from design and implementation through testing, deployment and production supportDevelop modern, high-performance Java applications using Java 21 and the latest language features, JVM improvements and engineering best practicesBuild reliable, scalable and low-latency systems operating in real-time market environmentsInvestigate production issues, optimise system performance and continuously improve platform reliabilityContribute to architecture, code reviews and technical design discussionsDrive automation, CI/CD and engineering best practices across the trading platform What we're looking for 5+ years of professional Java software engineering experiencePrevious experience developing software within an algorithmic trading firm, proprietary trading firm, market maker, hedge fund, exchange or electronic trading environment is requiredStrong expertise in modern Java, ideally Java 17 or Java 21, with experience building production systems using the latest language features and concurrency frameworksExperience developing business-critical, real-time distributed systemsPython experience for tooling, scripting or automationComfortable working in Linux environmentsExperience with Docker, Kubernetes or similar container platformsStrong debugging, analytical and performance optimisation skillsExcellent communication skills with the ability to work directly with traders, quantitative researchers and technical stakeholdersComfortable taking ownership and delivering high-quality software with minimal supervision Does this role sound like a match?
