Job Description We are looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to independently own the design of backend components for a distributed ground segment software system, covering areas such as system integration across multiple connected systems, secure data exchange, end-to-end monitoring, and service APIs consumed by web front-ends and external systems. You will also provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers within the backend team. Your key responsibilities include:Design, implement and maintain backend services in Java (Spring) and/or PythonDevelop and integrate REST APIs and asynchronous interfaces towards partner systems, external nodes and front-end applicationsImplement components for secure data handling, access control and auditabilityContribute to end-to-end monitoring and operability features of the systemSupport integration with existing external systems and their interface updatesWrite unit and integration tests and support formal verification and validation activitiesPackage and deploy services using Docker and Kubernetes in cloud-based environmentsParticipate in design discussions, code reviews and agile development ceremoniesProduce and maintain technical documentation under configuration control Essential qualifications and experienceUniversity degree or equivalent education in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related disciplineSeveral years of professional experience developing backend systems in Java (Spring) and/or PythonSolid experience designing and consuming REST APIsExperience with relational databases and data modellingHands-on experience with Docker; familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud platformsProficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows (e.g. GitLab)Focus on writing modular, testable and maintainable codeExperience with backend testing frameworks and automated testing (e.g. JUnit, pytest)Ability to work independently and as part of a teamStrong prioritization and time-management skillsFluent in the English language Other desirable qualifications and experienceExperience integrating heterogeneous systems and updating existing external interfacesKnowledge of security mechanisms such as OAuth2/OIDC, TLS and encryption of data at rest and in transitExperience with message brokers and event-driven architecturesBackground in the space ground segment domain or other mission-critical systemsExperience with monitoring and observability stacks (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana)German or French language skills Work Location This is a hybrid role based in Basel, Switzerland, combining regular on-site collaboration with the flexibility to work remotely part of the week.
