Software Engineer

Chronic disease isn't managed in a clinic. It is managed at home, in relationships, in the everyday. What's on the dinner table, what gets said, and who notices when someone's struggling. For the 130 million Americans managing a chronic condition, the healthcare system has offered the same answer for decades: a 15-minute doctor's visit, a pamphlet, and a portal login they'll never use. At Nuna, we are building an AI health coach that shows up like a person who actually has time: available at 3am, infinitely patient, and never behind a waiting room. We use motivational interviewing to help patients and their families see themselves clearly, design experiments that fit their real lives, and navigate a system that has not historically been on their side. We are building from the ground up around a simple belief: patients don't want to be healthy; they want their lives back. We're not competing with other health apps. Your team Our products are only as good as the care and science behind them. We are a small team of engineers, designers, product managers, and clinicians who work together to build for both patients and providers. You will be expected to own real pieces of the product from day one and be responsible for building, shipping, and supporting them in production. The role As a software engineer, you own meaningful parts of the product end to end: you design them, build them, ship them, and keep them running. You'll work in the systems at the heart of the coach — the AI and agent logic, the services behind it, the data it depends on — and you'll make the day-to-day architecture and trade-off calls within your domain. You'll do this with a high degree of autonomy, and you'll help raise the bar for the engineers around you. Comfort with ambiguity matters here: the work rarely arrives fully specified. What You’ll Do Own meaningful features and services end to end — design, build, ship, and operate them in productionContribute to architecture decisions in the systems you work in, including the AI/agent and product systems at the core of the coachWrite high-quality, well-tested, observable code, and help others do the same through reviews and pairingTreat privacy, security, and the responsible handling of health data as part of doing the job wellBreak ambiguous product problems into shippable work, making pragmatic trade-offs to deliverPartner with product, design, and the Data org to turn requirements into working software What We’re Looking For Bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar fieldStrong engineering skills with the ability to own a feature or system end to end — backend services, APIs, and the code that ties them togetherExperience operating what you build: testing, deployment, and observabilityComfort with ambiguity within your domain — able to move from a rough problem to a shipped solutionClear communication and the ability to work well across product, design, and engineeringA genuine interest in improving healthcare alongside an interdisciplinary teamAble to work from our San Francisco office a minimum of 2 days per week Bonus Points Experience with Kotlin, TypeScript, React, and FlutterExperience with AI/LLM product systems or agentsYou've worked with healthcare data, or in another high-trust, regulated domainMobile experience, or experience bridging mobile clients and backend systemsExperience shipping in an early-stage or fast-moving consumer product Nuna is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
