Description

Transforming B2B Marketing, One Buyer Journey at a Time Pretzl is redefining what a B2B marketing agency can be. As a B2B Technology-and-People-as-a-Service (TaPaaS) agency with approx. 350 people globally, we're not just advising clients - we're building the technology that transforms how businesses connect with their buyers. Our flagship product, Journey Lab is changing the game for buyer journey optimisation. We need engineers who care deeply about the problems we're solving, not just the tickets they're assigned. Role overview We’re looking for an experienced Senior Engineer to join our Journey Lab squad and help us strengthen how the product is shaped, built, and operated. We are hiring towards the upper end of Senior Engineer level. We’re looking for someone who has already been owning complex and ambiguous work, influencing technical direction, developing other engineers, and improving how a product team delivers. You’ll be a senior technical contributor within a tight-knit team of four developers, one designer, and one product owner. You’ll own complex initiatives end-to-end, help break larger product opportunities into coherent vertical slices, contribute to the architectural direction of the platform, mentor other engineers, and raise the standard for how we plan, build, review, and ship work. This isn’t a role for someone who wants to be handed fully specified tickets and churn out code. We need an engineer who wants to be involved earlier in the product process, working alongside product and design while problems are still being clarified, trade-offs are being discussed, and the right solution is still emerging. We already have strong leadership buy-in for a more product-led engineering model. The opportunity here is to help embed that model day to day: bringing engineering judgement into shaping, improving delivery quality, and helping the wider team move away from a ticket-taking mindset towards shared ownership of product outcomes. Exceptional candidates who demonstrate sustained Staff-level scope and impact may be considered for appointment at Staff Engineer level. This is a fully remote, UK-based role with the expectation to travel to London approximately once per month. We are not currently hiring this role as an overseas remote position. As a Senior Engineer at Pretzl, you will: Lead complex product work from early shaping through to production deploymentTurn ambiguous product problems into clear technical approaches, sensible delivery plans, and coherent vertical slicesWork directly with product leadership, design, and your squad to shape solutions that meet user needsBring engineering judgement into conversations before work is fully specified, helping clarify gaps, risks, dependencies, and trade-offsMake pragmatic architectural decisions within your domain and clearly explain the reasoning behind themDesign and build solutions that are maintainable, testable, and appropriately scalableOwn delivery quality as well as implementation, ensuring work is meaningfully tested and production-readyLead debugging efforts for complex issues and identify systemic problems, not just symptomsCreate clear technical plans and pull requests that explain the reasoning behind the implementation, not just the code changesMentor and develop other engineers through pairing, code reviews, feedback, and stretch opportunitiesHelp improve engineering practices, product judgement, technical standards, and delivery effectiveness across the teamUse AI development tools such as Cursor and Claude Code thoughtfully, treating them as collaborators rather than shortcuts that bypass understandingCommunicate technical concepts, uncertainty, and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholdersContribute to hiring and onboarding activities What We're Looking For: We’re looking for someone who combines strong engineering judgement with genuine product curiosity. You do not need to be a product manager, but you should care about why something matters, how users will experience it, and whether the solution being shaped is the right one. Essential: A sustained track record of operating effectively at Senior Engineer levelProven ability to lead complex and ambiguous product work from early shaping through to productionStrong technical judgement, including pragmatic architectural decisions, clear trade-offs, and sensible management of technical debtStrong experience with modern web technologies; our stack includes SvelteKit, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes, and DockerGenuine product curiosity, with the ability to challenge, clarify, and shape work constructively alongside product and designEvidence of impact beyond your own code, including mentoring engineers and improving team practices, quality, or deliveryExcellent communication skills across both technical and non-technical audiencesConfident use of AI development tools, such as Cursor or Claude Code, while maintaining understanding, ownership, and code quality The level of appointment will reflect the scope and impact demonstrated through the interview process. Nice to Have: Experience in B2B marketing or related domainsPrevious experience working in a product-led engineering teamExperience with SvelteKit or a comparable modern frontend frameworkExperience operating systems on AWS and Kubernetes This Role May Not Be for You If: You are looking for your first opportunity at Senior Engineer levelYou prefer to pick up fully specified tickets rather than contribute to shaping the workYou expect product and design decisions to be fully resolved before engineering becomes involvedYou use AI tools to generate code you cannot explain, test, or maintainYou want technical leadership to be primarily about authority rather than ownership, influence, and developing others Our Tech Stack: Frontend: SvelteKit, TypeScriptBackend: Node.js, TypeScriptDatabase: PostgreSQLInfrastructure: AWS, Kubernetes, DockerAI development tools: Cursor, Claude Code, and related tools where they add genuine valueWe do not expect candidates to have worked with every element of the stack. Strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgement, and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies matter more than exact keyword matches. And in return, Pretzl offers: Competitive compensation package25 days leave, increasing to 30 days based on serviceAdditional 'moments that matter days' for birthdays, sports days, and other important life momentsTime off for volunteeringLife assurance, healthcare cashplan, employee assistance programme, and Digital GPCycle to work schemeFlexible spending allowance for health/dental insurance, wellbeing, family life, work life, hobbies and experiencesQuarterly in-person and virtual social activitiesOffice transfer and secondment opportunities Why us? Sustainable Pace, Real Balance We believe great work happens when people have space to live their lives. No crunch culture, no expectation to be always-on. We trust you to do excellent work within reasonable hours. We have offices across the UK with a hybrid working policy, and are open to remote applicants if you’re not located close to an office. We're Not a Feature Factory We are building a product-led engineering culture where engineers are involved in the work before it becomes a list of tickets. You’ll work collaboratively from feedback capture through definition, solution shaping, build, review, and release. Your input will matter at every stage, and you’ll help the team continue moving towards shared ownership of product outcomes. Clear Career Progression We have a career framework with a clear path for those who want to deepen technical leadership, or a shift into management if that is your thing. We review progress against this roadmap regularly and encourage the development and growth of our people.
