Quality Assurance Engineer with Automation Testing - Hybrid in Toronto, ON, Canada

Candidates must be able to work a hybrid schedule, either 3 days a week in the clients' Parsippany, NJ office or Toronto, ON office We are seeking an experienced QA Engineer / Software Test Engineer to support our growing Quality Assurance organization and global technology initiatives. This role will be responsible for planning and executing comprehensive testing across web applications, APIs, backend systems, and integrated technology platforms. The ideal candidate is a hands-on QA professional with strong experience in manual, functional, integration, regression, and end-to-end testing, along with the ability to develop and maintain automated tests where appropriate. This individual should be comfortable learning new applications, developing test strategies and test cases, identifying defects, validating complex workflows, and taking ownership of testing activities from requirements through release. Experience with modern automation tools such as Playwright and TypeScript is important, but the role will involve a combination of manual testing and test automation. The QA Engineer will work closely with software engineers, product teams, business stakeholders, and other QA professionals to ensure applications meet functional, technical, and business requirements. Key Responsibilities Manual & Functional Testing Review business, functional, and technical requirements to develop comprehensive test scenarios and test cases.Perform hands-on manual testing of web applications, APIs, backend systems, and integrated platforms.Execute functional, regression, integration, end-to-end, and exploratory testing.Validate application workflows, business rules, system integrations, and data processing.Identify, document, track, and retest software defects.Perform database and data integrity validation as needed.Support testing across multiple applications and technology platforms as project needs evolve.Work closely with development and product teams to clarify requirements and identify potential quality issues early in the development lifecycle.Test Automation Develop and maintain automated tests using Playwright and TypeScript.Automate appropriate regression, UI, API, and repetitive test scenarios.Execute and troubleshoot existing automated test suites.Identify opportunities where automation can improve test efficiency, repeatability, and overall coverage.Support the ongoing enhancement and maintenance of automation frameworks.Balance manual and automated testing approaches based on project requirements, risk, and business priorities.API & Backend Testing Test REST and GraphQL APIs using both manual and automated approaches.Validate backend functionality, system integrations, and data workflows.Perform database validation and data integrity testing.Troubleshoot issues across frontend, API, backend, and database layers.Quality Assurance & Test Strategy Develop and execute test plans and testing strategies for assigned projects.Support testing methodologies including:Functional TestingIntegration TestingEnd-to-End TestingRegression TestingComponent TestingContract TestingExploratory TestingEnsure appropriate testing coverage based on business and technical risk.Participate in requirements reviews, design discussions, defect reviews, and release readiness activities.Recommend improvements to testing processes, test coverage, and overall QA practices.CI/CD & Development Practices Support automated test execution within CI/CD pipelines.Work with Git, GitHub, and GitHub Actions.Collaborate with development and DevOps teams to support continuous testing and delivery.Follow QA and automation best practices to create reliable and maintainable tests.Collaboration & Ownership Take ownership of testing activities for assigned projects from requirements analysis through release.Independently manage testing priorities, test execution, defects, and deliverables.Work effectively with distributed global development and business teams.Communicate testing status, risks, defects, and quality concerns to project stakeholders.Provide recommendations regarding appropriate manual and automated testing approaches.Required Qualifications 5+ years of experience in software quality assurance and software testing.Strong hands-on experience with manual and functional testing of complex software applications.Experience developing test plans, test cases, test scenarios, and regression test suites.Strong understanding of software testing principles, methodologies, and the software development lifecycle.Experience testing modern web applications.Experience with API testing, including REST and/or GraphQL services.Experience identifying, documenting, troubleshooting, and retesting defects.Experience performing integration and end-to-end testing across multiple systems.Hands-on experience with test automation tools, preferably Playwright and TypeScript.Experience using Git-based workflows.Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned testing initiatives.Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.Preferred Qualifications Experience developing or maintaining automated regression tests using Playwright and TypeScript.Experience with Python or Java.Experience with SQL and database testing.Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated test execution.Familiarity with AWS cloud environments.Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.Experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter or k6.Exposure to security testing concepts.Experience working in large, global enterprise environments.
