Java Software Engineer

If so, this engineering role offers the chance to sit at the centre of a Tier‑1 Buyside firm’s platform, partnering directly with front‑office teams to shape how they analyse markets, run simulations, and execute trades. Role overview A Tier-1 Buyside firm is seeking a senior software engineer in Hong Kong to act as the local anchor for its global platform in Asia-Pacific. The team builds and maintains the end‑to‑end systems that is used by portfolio managers and traders. This role is designed to be a structural part of the APAC operating model: you will be both a hands‑on builder and the primary technology voice for regional investment teams into a globally coordinated roadmap. Responsibilities Serve as the first point of contact in Asia-Pacific for all matters related to the platform, building trusted relationships with portfolio managers, traders, and engineering teams.Actively represent APAC priorities in the global roadmap, clearly communicating local requirements and pushing for delivery of high‑impact outcomes for regional strategies.Develop and ship production-quality software across the stack, including front‑end, back‑end, data layers, and the workflows that connect them.Take ownership of significant workstreams, especially where APAC relevance and business impact are central, ensuring features move from design through implementation into live use.Participate in senior‑level forums, contributing an engineering perspective and representing the team when hiring and onboarding future regional engineers. Requirements 4+ years of engineering experience, with a clear track record of developing and supporting production systems end‑to‑end.Strong skills in an object‑oriented back‑end language such as JavaEvidenced ability to own business stakeholders directly, build trust, and influence what gets built based on commercial impact and user needs.Self‑directed, highly accountable, and comfortable being the only engineer from a global team in a region, coordinating across time zones.Located in Hong Kong with a genuine desire to be close to APAC investment teams. Preferred experience (not required) Previous experience as a regional lead within a global engineering organisationBackground in hedge funds or asset managementFluency with AI/agentic toolingCantonese or Mandarin language skills for working with non‑English-speaking stakeholders.
