Staff Frontend Engineer

As a Staff Frontend Engineer, you’ll be the person who defines how a complex, mission-critical NHS platform is structured, scaled, and improved, not just the person who ships the next UI feature. You will join a healthtech company building enterprise-grade software used by clinical admin staff, clinicians, and patients across the UK. This Staff Frontend Engineer role exists to raise the engineering bar. You will own frontend architecture, performance, and maintainability so product engineers can build safely and quickly on top of a solid foundation. What You'll Do Own the frontend architecture end to end, defining patterns, structure, and standards that make a large, complex codebase easier for every other engineer to work in. Shape the long-term architectural direction of the application, balancing new feature delivery with scalability, performance, and maintainability. engineer robust, well-tested TypeScript components and systems that implement an existing design system cleanly and consistently, rather than designing UI from scratch. Dive deep into frontend performance: profile, optimise, and collaborate across the stack to keep the product fast as it grows to hundreds of screens and heavy usage. Work closely with backend engineers to design and refine APIs, ensuring clean contracts and a smooth division of responsibilities between front and back end. Tackle technical debt, manage dependency upgrades, and apply secure development practices so the platform stays healthy in a regulated, clinically sensitive environment. What You'll Bring Around 7 years building large-scale frontend applications, ideally in enterprise or B2B products with broad, complex UX rather than simple marketing sites. Significant architectural experience and the confidence to make and explain frontend architecture decisions that others will build on. Hands-on experience with more than one modern framework (e.g. React, Vue, Angular) plus strong TypeScript and tooling skills; you understand patterns and trade-offs, not just framework-specific tricks. Comfort reading backend code, collaborating on API design, and solving performance or reliability issues that span the full stack. A STEM degree or equivalent engineering grounding, with strong fundamentals in scalability, maintainability, and secure development. Articulate communication, a proactive mindset, and genuine comfort with ambiguity, you enjoy unfamiliar problems and don’t need everything fully specified to make progress.
