Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js, DevOps, AI/LLMs)
I'm currently partnering with a well-funded health technology business that is building innovative digital products at the intersection of healthcare, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.
They are looking for a highly capable Senior Backend Engineer to join a small, high-performing team and play a key role in designing, building, and scaling cloud-native backend systems and AI-powered digital products.

What You'll Be Doing
Designing, building, deploying, and maintaining scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and modern backend frameworksDeveloping robust RESTful APIs and microservices to support customer-facing applications and AI-powered featuresCollaborating closely with product, engineering, and commercial stakeholders to deliver high-quality software from concept through to productionMaking extensive use of Large Language Models and AI development tools to accelerate engineering, while applying sound technical judgement to review, optimise, and maintain generated codeBuilding and maintaining cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code and modern DevOps practicesDesigning and managing CI/CD pipelines to enable fast, reliable, and secure software deliveryDeploying and operating containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes (or similar orchestration platforms)Monitoring production systems, improving observability, and ensuring high availability, performance, and securityIntegrating third-party AI services and developing backend functionality powered by Large Language Models and AI agentsContributing to backend architecture, engineering standards, security, and platform scalabilityHelping shape the technical roadmap as the company expands its platform capabilities
What They're Looking For
Strong commercial experience as a Backend or Full Stack Engineer with a primary focus on Node.jsExpert-level Node.js, JavaScript, and TypeScript experienceStrong experience designing and building scalable APIs, distributed systems, and cloud-native applicationsHands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud PlatformStrong DevOps experience, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar), and cloud deploymentsExperience working with modern databases, including SQL and NoSQL technologiesHands-on experience working with AI technologies, including Large Language Models, AI agents, prompt engineering, or related toolingStrong understanding of software architecture, scalability, security, and maintainable engineering practicesExperience with monitoring, logging, and observability toolsAbility to thrive in a fast-moving, product-focused environmentExcellent communication skills and ability to work remotely within a distributed teamHigh levels of ownership, initiative, and a proactive approach to problem-solving
Preferred Background
Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical disciplineStrong academic pedigree, ideally from a leading universityExperience working within high-growth technology businesses, venture-backed startups, or product-led software companiesExperience with serverless architectures, event-driven systems, or message queues would be advantageousExposure to healthcare, health tech, or regulated environments would be beneficial but is not essential
