Sitting at the intersection of data engineering, platform administration, and data governance, this role enables trusted, discoverable, and secure data products across the enterprise. The successful candidate will have strong experience with modern cloud data platforms, metadata management, data cataloguing, and analytics engineering. You will be responsible for establishing enterprise-wide governance frameworks, configuring data catalogues, building scalable ELT/ETL pipelines, and managing identity and access controls. This is a 12-month contract role based in a major German city, requiring occasional onsite presence.

Data Governance & Platform Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Governance & Platform Engineer to design, implement, and manage enterprise data platforms while ensuring robust data governance, security, quality, and compliance standards.
This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, platform administration, and data governance, enabling trusted, discoverable, and secure data products across the enterprise.
The successful candidate will have strong experience with modern cloud data platforms, metadata management, data cataloguing, and analytics engineering, with expertise in Microsoft Purview, Databricks Unity Catalog, Databricks, Microsoft Entra ID, SQL, Spark, and dbt.
Key Responsibilities
Data Governance & Management
Design and implement enterprise-wide data governance frameworks, policies, standards, and controls.Configure and manage Microsoft Purview for data cataloguing, lineage tracking, metadata management, and data discovery.Implement and maintain Databricks Unity Catalog to support centralized governance of data assets, permissions, and auditing.Collaborate with business stakeholders, data owners, and data stewards to establish governance processes and accountability.Monitor data quality metrics and implement controls to improve data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.Support regulatory and compliance requirements including GDPR, data retention, and information security policies.
Data Platform Engineering
Design, build, and maintain scalable data platforms using Databricks and cloud-native technologies.Develop and optimise Spark workloads for large-scale data processing and analytics.Build and maintain ELT/ETL pipelines using dbt, SQL, and Databricks.Implement data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration processes across structured and unstructured data sources.Optimise platform performance, reliability, security, and cost efficiency.Automate deployment, monitoring, and operational processes through Infrastructure as Code and DevOps practices.
Security & Access Management
Manage authentication and authorization using Microsoft Entra ID.Implement role-based access controls (RBAC), least-privilege access models, and data security policies.Configure and monitor audit logging, access controls, and governance workflows across the data platform.Partner with security teams to ensure alignment with enterprise cybersecurity standards.
Data Engineering & Analytics Enablement
Develop complex SQL queries, views, and data models to support reporting and analytics requirements.Create reusable, governed data products that enable self-service analytics.Implement scalable data transformation frameworks using dbt and Spark.Support business intelligence, data science, and AI initiatives through reliable and trusted data assets.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview.Experience implementing and administering Databricks Unity Catalog.Advanced knowledge of Databricks platform architecture and administration.Experience with Microsoft Entra ID including identity and access management.Strong SQL development and performance tuning skills.Experience developing and optimising Apache Spark workloads.Expertise in dbt (Data Build Tool) for analytics engineering and data transformation.Experience with data modelling, metadata management, and data lineage concepts.Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AzureUnderstanding of CI/CD pipelines, Git, and DevOps practices.Experience with data warehousing and lakehouse architectures.
