Role: Typescript Java DevOps Location: Auckland, NZ Experience: 8-15 years We are seeking a highly skilled Platform Engineer with strong expertise in Backstage, TypeScript, Spring boot and Java to design, build, and operate an enterprise-grade Internal Developer Platform (IDP). The role will focus on enabling self-service developer workflows, golden paths, and seamless integration with enterprise DevOps toolchains to improve developer productivity, standardization, and governance. Experience 8–15 years of overall experienceMinimum 4+ years in TypeScript and Java Springbok/MicroservicesProven hands-on experience in Backstage implementation and platform engineering Key Responsibilities Backstage Platform Development Design, develop, and enhance Backstage Developer PortalBuild and maintain Software Templates (Scaffolder) and golden pathsDevelop custom Backstage plugins (frontend + backend) using TypeScriptManage Backstage Catalog (entities, systems, ownership, metadata governance) DevOps & Platform Integration Integrate Backstage with SCM, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, security and monitoring toolsBuild reusable CI/CD templates and pipeline-as-code frameworksEnable end-to-end automation (build, test, deploy, monitor)Implement RBAC, secrets management, and security-first pipelines Engineering & Development Build backend services using Java (Spring Boot, Microservices architecture)Develop and manage API integrations across platform servicesWork on containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes) Platform Enablement Drive self-service capabilities and developer experience improvementsCreate and maintain documentation, onboarding guides, and standardsPromote best practices across DevOps, security, and platform engineering Operations & Reliability Ensure platform scalability, reliability, and performanceParticipate in incident resolution, RCA, and continuous improvementMaintain observability (logging, monitoring, alerting) Must-Have Skills Core Platform Skills Backstage (implementation, customization, plugin development)Strong TypeScript / Node.js developmentExperience with Developer Portals / Internal Developer Platforms Backend & Engineering Strong Java (Spring Boot, Microservices)API design and integrationGit workflows (branching, PRs, merge strategies) Good-to-Have Skills Maven and polyglot build ecosystemsEvent streaming (Kafka)Cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP)Service management integrations (e.g., JSM)Platform engineering concepts: Golden Path, self-service, abstraction layers DevOps & Cloud CI/CD tools: Jenkins / Azure DevOps / Bitbucket pipelinesKubernetes and container orchestrationInfrastructure automation and pipeline designCode quality tools: Snyk (or equivalent) Behavioral Competencies Strong stakeholder collaboration across engineering, platform, and security teamsOwnership mindset with ability to drive outcomes independentlyHigh focus on quality, scalability, and continuous improvementExperience working in Agile delivery environments
