About The Role
The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a highly skilled Full Stack Web Application Developer to join the Library Information Technology (LIT) team.
This role involves designing, developing, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting web-based applications that support the library’s mission to provide accessible and innovative research tools and resources.
The successful candidate will conduct system analysis, contribute to application architecture, and offer technical leadership and training to library staff.
They will work closely with stakeholders to develop solutions that enhance public discovery, access, and engagement with library resources.
Supported applications include both commercial and open-source systems, such as the Iowa Digital Library (Islandora) and ArchivesSpace, among others.
The position reports to the Administrative Lead and plays a key role in supporting the technological infrastructure that underpins library operations and services.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experienceMinimum of 2 years experience developing application solutionsProficiency in programming languages such as PHP, Python, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Ruby on Rails, etc.Experience working with relational databases like Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQLKnowledge of web publishing technologies including Apache, IIS, and AWSDemonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environmentStrong communication skills to interact with users from diverse technological backgrounds
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and support backend technologies, including database management and server configurationsRecommend, implement, and maintain Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, Omeka, and LibAppsInstall and configure both vended and open-source library web applicationsCreate functional and technical specifications for local development projects, involving input from library staff and stakeholdersModify, write, and document program code to meet project requirementsIdentify and recommend tools, languages, and technologies to improve application development and support processesAutomate development environment setup and maintenance tasksProvide backup system administration support and ensure system reliabilityOffer second-tier support to technical services and public services staff maintaining library dataDeliver third-tier support to students, faculty, and library users, troubleshooting issues and providing guidance
