Senior Software Engineer | Distributed Systems & Data Platforms Remote | Australia We're partnering with an Australian technology company building a next-generation data platform, looking for a highly hands-on Senior Software Engineer to join a small, technically strong engineering team. This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys getting deep into the code, solving complex distributed systems problems and building enterprise software products. You'll work across distributed query execution, data federation, performance optimisation and challenging customer environments. The Role You'll be involved in both core product development and complex customer implementations, working on technically challenging problems across distributed data systems. Your responsibilities will include: Developing and improving distributed data processing and query execution capabilities.Writing production code using Apache Spark and JVM-based technologies.Investigating query performance, execution behaviour and optimisation opportunities.Working on data federation, query pushdown and connector frameworks.Troubleshooting complex performance, scalability and reliability issues. What We're Looking For Strong commercial software engineering experience, ideally 7–12+ years.A genuinely hands-on engineer who is still regularly writing and debugging production code.Strong experience building enterprise software products, distributed systems or data services.Practical, hands-on experience with Apache Spark, ideally including performance tuning and understanding execution behaviour.Strong JVM development experience using Scala, Java or Kotlin.Solid understanding of distributed processing, SQL and performance optimisation.Experience working with complex data platforms, query engines or distributed data infrastructure. Particularly relevant backgrounds include engineers who have worked on: Distributed data platforms and query engines.Database internals, query processing or data federation.Enterprise software products with significant data processing requirements.Streaming, distributed processing or large-scale data services. Experience with technologies and ecosystems such as Databricks, Snowflake, Cloudera, Starburst, Dremio, Trino or similar would be valuable. Why Consider It?
