The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space.
Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC.

Primary Responsibilities
The Staff Software Engineer - Back End serves as an emerging subject matter expert and individual contributor who operates with a high level of trust, autonomy, and ownership.
With minimal oversight from leadership, you will provide technical leadership to ensure scope, schedule, quality, and delivery requirements are met and may support adjacent programs within the business unit.
You will represent the software engineering discipline in technical and product planning, advocate for effective technical solutions, and clearly communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs.
You will serve as a technical lead and trusted partner to engineering teams, product teams, clients, and stakeholders while driving improvements in software engineering processes and practices.
Primary expectations of a Staff Software Engineer - Back End include:
Provides technical leadership for the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of complex back-end applications and servicesPlans and executes technical roadmaps for new and existing projects with minimal guidance from technical leadershipLeads technical discussions and contributes to architecture, system design, API design, and technology selection decisionsDesigns and evaluates scalable, maintainable, secure, and reliable technical solutions while clearly communicating architectural decisions and tradeoffsDesigns, develops, and maintains REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven architecturesPartners with product, design, engineering, and other cross-functional team members to translate product and business needs into effective technical solutionsActively participates in planning sessions and technical discussions with clients, partners, and key stakeholdersBreaks down complex or ambiguous technical problems, identifies constraints and dependencies, and provides clear technical directionReduces technical ambiguity and debt through documentation, refactoring, automated testing, and improvements to engineering practicesEstablishes and promotes engineering standards related to code quality, testing, maintainability, security, performance, and reliabilityPerforms code reviews and provides technical guidance and actionable feedback to engineersMentors engineers and supports technical growth through coaching, knowledge sharing, and technical leadershipIdentifies technical risks and dependencies and provides recommendations to mitigate delivery risksCommunicates effectively about existing systems, architectural decisions, technical constraints, and project history to support technical demonstrations, proposals, and other client-facing activitiesPresents technical concepts and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences, clearly articulating implementation complexity, tradeoffs, risks, and costsParticipates in technical interviews and evaluations of engineering candidatesPeriodically travels to collaborate with and present to clients, partners, and stakeholders
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of software engineering experienceRelevant years of experience may be substituted for education9 years+ experience developing production applications and services using Java/J2EE and Spring Boot.Experience designing, developing, and integrating REST APIs and microservicesExpert-level proficiency in back-end software engineering, with experience providing technical leadership on complex software development effortsExperience designing and implementing scalable, maintainable, and reliable software solutionsExperience providing technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers

Experience developing applications, services, or automation using JavaExperience with PostgreSQL and ElasticsearchExperience designing and supporting event-driven architecturesExperience developing and deploying applications in AWSExperience with AWS services, including ECS and LambdaExperience with containerized application development and deployment using DockerExperience developing and maintaining infrastructure as code using TerraformExperience with GitLab, including source control and CI/CD pipelinesExperience with Maven and POM managementExperience with Python dependency management using PoetryExperience with automated testing, code reviews, debugging, and modern software engineering practicesExperience designing or supporting distributed systems and microservices architecturesExperience with application security, observability, performance optimization, and production troubleshootingExperience delivering software within federal government or public-sector environmentsExperience supporting technical solutioning, technical demonstrations, or client-facing engineering discussions

Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility.
