Our client is a well-established public sector organisation based in Wellington.
Over the last five years they have moved to the cloud, and the foundations are now in place.
They need a truly senior engineer to take the platform to the next level, set what excellent looks like, and help the team grow along the way.
This is a hands-on role with real influence.
You won’t have direct reports, but you will be the senior technical person the team looks to.
Your duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Acting as the senior technical authority for the Azure and Microsoft 365 platform, including Entra ID, identity and access, and security controls.Building and evolving cloud environments as code using Terraform and ARM/Bicep, with deployment pipelines in Git and Azure DevOps.Designing the controls and frameworks that applications across the organisation plug into, such as landing zones, Azure Policy, RBAC and privileged access.Leading the migration of the remaining on-premises services to the cloud over the next 12 months.Helping embed AI across the organisation in practical, useful ways.Mentoring engineers, peer reviewing their work, and lifting the team’s capability.Acting as the escalation point for complex incidents and leading root cause analysis.Working with the Architecture team and vendors to align with best practice.Reporting to the Platform & Services Lead as part of a Cloud team of Cloud Admins and Cloud Engineers.
Experience and Qualifications
Proven experience already operating at a senior level.
This is not a step-up role.Strong, hands-on infrastructure as code experience, standing up cloud environments with Terraform and/or ARM/Bicep through pipelines in Git or Azure DevOps (essential).Azure DevOps experience (essential).A solid infrastructure background.Deep Azure experience.
Strong AWS experience will also be considered.Experience with Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and identity and security controls (highly advantageous).A track record of mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards.Experience in the public sector, or with NZISM and government security requirements (advantageous).The ability to obtain and maintain a New Zealand Government security clearance (Confidential, potentially up to Secret).
This generally requires New Zealand citizenship, or permanent residency from a Five Eyes country.
