Cooley’s global patent counseling and prosecution team assists clients in the strategic acquisition, protection and monetisation of patent rights in the US, UK and Europe and in commercially significant markets around the world.
Our team of patent lawyers, located in offices across the US and UK, brings to bear decades of experience drafting, prosecuting, defending, and opposing patents at patent offices including the US Patent and Trademark Office and the European Patent Office.
In addition to our coverage across the US, UK and Europe, we have a carefully vetted network of counsel with whom we partner located in key jurisdictions worldwide.
The London patent practice was established in 2015 to offer clients a comprehensive service covering all aspects of patent practice in the life sciences, mechanical and high-tech sectors.
The Role
The successful candidate will join Cooley's growing London patent team and will work closely with colleagues in the US on a broad range of patent matters for innovative companies spanning software, artificial intelligence, electronics, engineering and other cutting-edge technologies.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in supporting clients at all stages of growth, from emerging companies to established market leaders.
The successful candidate will gain exposure to a varied practice, including patent drafting and prosecution before the UK Intellectual Property Office, European Patent Office and World Intellectual Property Office, strategic patent portfolio development, freedom-to-operate analyses, due diligence for corporate transactions, and contentious matters such as oppositions and appeals.
Working directly with partners, other associates and clients, the successful candidate will be encouraged to take ownership of matters, build strong client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of the London patent practice.
Key Requirements:
Dual-qualified UK & European Patent Attorney with 1-3 years’ post-qualification experience.Experience drafting patent applications and prosecuting applications before at least the EPO and/or UKIPO, with the ability to handle matters with an appropriate degree of independence.Experience of, and willingness to work across, a range of engineering and high-tech subject matter, including technologies outside the candidate's immediate area of expertise.
Interest in advising innovative companies across a broad range of sectors and technologies, including software, artificial intelligence, electronics and engineering.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical and legal concepts clearly and concisely.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide commercially focused advice to clients.Proven ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously, prioritise effectively and deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines.
Collaborative and proactive approach, with the ability to work effectively as part of an international team.Knowledge or experience of software/AI would be advantageous, particularly where this extends to bioinformatics applications.
An interest in business development and willingness to participate in client-facing and marketing activities would also be advantageous.
Academic Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in physics, electronics, computer science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline is required.
A relevant postgraduate qualification is preferred but not essential.
