Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer
Job Description
The Embedded Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains embedded computer system software for advanced military and naval applications, including control software for helicopter handling systems and related vision and winch systems used on ships and submarines.
This role ensures all software work complies with the Quality Management System and health and safety procedures, translates functional specifications into robust software capabilities, and supports in-field operations with some travel.
The engineer contributes to state-of-the-art products that help aircraft land safely on ships in severe weather conditions while continuously improving programming techniques and efficiency.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain embedded computer system software in accordance with approved software design documents for integration into military products.Translate high-level functional specifications and requirements into clearly defined software capabilities and functional specifications.Develop and update Software Requirements Descriptions (SRD), Software Design Descriptions (SDD), and Software Test Plans to support the full software development lifecycle.Update and maintain bug tracking repositories to summarize design status, code status, and issues, and keep software user manuals current and accurate.Ensure all work is performed in compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS) and established software engineering standards.Keep abreast of state-of-the-art software systems, tools, and techniques to advance programming practices and improve development efficiency.Provide in-field support for deployed systems, including some travel to customer or operational sites as required.Follow all health and safety procedures, take reasonable precautions during work, immediately report accidents and incidents, and participate in incident investigations.Partner with a senior team member to receive training and mentoring, then progressively take ownership of tasks and contribute to core development activities.Support projects focused on military and naval applications, including control software for helicopter handling systems and associated vision and winch subsystems.Participate in code reviews and apply structured coding practices to ensure reliability, maintainability, and adherence to project standards.Communicate technical solutions and design decisions clearly to project management and the broader development team.Collaborate closely with software developers, electrical engineers, and other technical staff to integrate embedded software with hardware and system-level designs.Apply software engineering principles to routine development, debugging, and testing tasks, using appropriate tools and methodologies.Use version control systems to manage source code, branches, and releases in a disciplined and traceable manner.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 1 year of experience in embedded C development for embedded systems.Experience or knowledge of VxWorks real-time operating system.Background in the aerospace or defense industry, working on safety-critical or mission-critical systems.Familiarity with Git and practical experience using it for version control and collaborative development.Experience participating in code reviews and following structured coding practices.Bachelors degree in Software Engineering or an equivalent software-focused discipline.Ability to apply software engineering principles to routine development and debugging tasks.Ability to communicate technical solutions effectively to project management and development team members.Ability to work collaboratively with engineers and technical staff across disciplines.Familiarity with version control systems, software design concepts, debugging tools, and basic testing methodologies.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Linux or embedded Linux environments.VHDL programming experience for FPGAs.Exposure to servo drive applications and related control systems.Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) beyond VxWorks.Knowledge of Python for scripting, tooling, or test automation in embedded software contexts.Experience working on embedded systems in complex hardware-software environments.Interest in defense and naval projects and contributing to systems that enhance safety and operational capability at sea.
Work Environment
This role is based on-site five days per week in an office environment with cubicles, working closely with a multidisciplinary team of approximately 12 people, including software developers and electrical engineers.
The team collaborates on advanced defense and naval projects that have real-world impact, particularly systems that assist aircraft in landing on ships under severe weather conditions.
The work setting follows a business casual dress code and uses modern embedded development technologies such as embedded C, VxWorks, Linux, Git, FPGA and VHDL, RTOS, Python, and various debugging and testing tools.

Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $85000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
