Description

A foundational engineering role spanning mechanical design, microfluidics, electromechanical integration, hardware control and system-level testing. About the role We are seeking a Senior Mechanical & Electronics Engineer to help develop the integrated systems at the heart of our next-generation molecular sensing platform. This is a highly hands-on role spanning CAD design, microfluidic systems, cartridge development, electromechanical integration, scripting and test-fixture qualification. You will translate laboratory prototypes into compact, reliable and repeatable sensing devices. The central challenge is bringing mechanical, fluidic and electrical components together into reliable systems while balancing performance, miniaturisation, cost and future manufacturability. You will have significant ownership of detailed designs, component integration, experimental rigs and the methods used to demonstrate system performance. About us We are a stealth, venture-backed and grant-funded deep-tech company developing a proprietary photonic sensing platform. We are backed by a leading European venture fund, experienced health-tech investors and strategic operators, alongside significant non-dilutive funding from SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation. Our mission is to make molecular changes measurable through miniaturised, low-cost and low-power photonic sensing technology, initially focused on healthcare applications. As we move from laboratory development towards integrated devices, we are expanding a multidisciplinary team spanning photonics, chemistry, biosensing, microfluidics and engineering. Responsibilities Mechanical design: Independently design and iterate parts and assemblies using CAD, preferably SolidWorks, for cartridges, fluidic interfaces, fixtures and integrated devices.System architecture: Develop system architecture diagrams, system decompositions and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), translating requirements into clear subsystem designs and interfaces.Microfluidic development: Design, build and troubleshoot microfluidic systems and cartridge-based components, evaluating fluid handling, sealing and repeatability.Electromechanical integration: Select and integrate pumps, valves, motors, linear actuators, probes and sensors into functional experimental and product-development systems.Scripting and hardware control: Use Python and practical control scripts to operate electrical components, automate test sequences and acquire and analyse data.Test fixtures and qualification: Design, build and qualify test fixtures and test coupons, establishing test methods and acceptance criteria with the relevant technical teams.Troubleshooting and root cause analysis: Investigate mechanical, fluidic and electrical faults, identify underlying causes and verify corrective actions.Cross-functional integration: Work with photonics, electronics, chemistry and biosensing colleagues to resolve interfaces and translate assay requirements into engineering solutions.Development documentation: Maintain clear design records, test results and technical decisions that support repeatable development and future verification and validation. Experience and profile Essential experience Proficiency in CAD, preferably SolidWorks, with the ability to design parts and assemblies independently.Hands-on experience with microfluidic systems.Experience developing IVD or medical platforms, including P&IDs, system architecture diagrams, system decomposition and system-level engineering.Practical experience with microfluidic electromechanical or cartridge-based components such as pumps, valves, motors, linear actuators, probes and sensors.Demonstrable working knowledge of scripting and controlling electrical components.Working knowledge of Python for hardware control, testing or data analysis.Experience designing, building and qualifying test fixtures and test coupons.Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills, ideally including formal root cause analysis. Particularly valuable experience SolidWorks PDM or equivalent product-data-management experience.Computational fluid dynamics, thermal and biochemical simulations, ideally using COMSOL.IVD platform development within FDA regulatory or ISO 13485 quality-management frameworks.Working with integrated circuits or photonic components within microfluidic chips or systems.Design of experiments and statistical analysis using tools such as JMP or Minitab.Mechanical drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).Project-management tools such as Monday.com or Jira. Why work for us? Hands-on ownership: Your work will help turn advanced sensing technology into reliable cartridges, test systems and integrated devices.Deep-tech, real-world impact: Work on novel molecular sensing technology with the potential to change how health is monitored.Exceptional people: Collaborate with top-tier talent from Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College, alongside leaders across sensing, chemistry and product.High-pace, high-support culture: An open structure, fast iteration and genuine room to experiment, supported by regular feedback and collaboration.Competitive compensation and meaningful equity: Receive a competitive salary and early-stage share options, giving you a real stake in what you are building. Location and application London, UK. This is a hands-on hardware-development position and will be primarily in person. Relocation support and UK visa sponsorship are available for exceptional candidates. If you’re excited by molecular sensing and want to build something genuinely new, please apply through the listing or email privately: careers@chunehealth.com All applications and discussions will be handled confidentially. Build the mechanical, microfluidic and electromechanical systems behind a new generation of molecular sensing.
