Process Control Engineer California, USA - This role is on-site and requires relocation to California. About the Opportunity We are seeking an experienced engineer to support process optimization, automation, and advanced control initiatives within a large industrial manufacturing environment. This position plays a key role in improving operational performance through the development, implementation, and maintenance of process control applications, regulatory control strategies, and optimization technologies. The ideal candidate will combine expertise in advanced process control, distributed control systems, and operational troubleshooting to help improve plant safety, reliability, efficiency, and profitability. This role works closely with operations, maintenance, process engineering, planning, and instrumentation teams to deliver sustainable performance improvements across complex production facilities. Key Responsibilities Design, implement, and maintain advanced process control (APC) applications and optimization strategies that improve unit performance and support production objectives.Develop and support inferential calculations, performance models, and process monitoring tools used in control and optimization applications.Configure, modify, and maintain regulatory and supervisory control strategies within distributed control systems.Analyze controller performance and tuning opportunities to improve process stability and responsiveness.Partner with operations personnel to troubleshoot control issues and maximize effectiveness of automation systems.Monitor alarm system performance, identify nuisance alarms, and support ongoing alarm rationalization and management initiatives.Collaborate with cybersecurity and IT stakeholders to maintain compliance, reliability, and availability of process control applications.Investigate process upsets and equipment-related control issues alongside instrumentation, process, analyzer, and maintenance specialists.Identify opportunities to improve plant performance, operating reliability, safety, and energy efficiency through automation enhancements.Support operator training and knowledge transfer related to control strategies, APC applications, and plant automation systems.Provide technical mentorship to less experienced engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices and standards.Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain expertise in advanced process control technologies and industry best practices. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.5+ years of experience in process control, automation, or advanced process control engineering within an industrial manufacturing environment.Experience supporting continuous process operations such as refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, energy, or related industries.Knowledge of distributed control systems (DCS) and advanced regulatory control concepts.Experience with controller tuning, control loop performance improvement, and process troubleshooting.Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across operations, maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of automation, APC, or process control experience in complex manufacturing facilities.Experience developing and maintaining multivariable control applications and optimization solutions.Strong understanding of hydrocarbon processing, blending, petrochemical, or other continuous-process operations.Experience with advanced control platforms, model-based control technologies, and process optimization tools.Familiarity with industrial data historians and analytics platforms such as PI System, Seeq, or similar technologies.Working knowledge of cybersecurity and network considerations for industrial control environments.Demonstrated track record of delivering measurable improvements in process performance, reliability, throughput, or energy efficiency.
