Backend Engineer — Applied AI Company: Matrix AI Product: Qanoni — Legal Technology Platform Location: Dubai, UAE Employment: Full-time Monthly Salary: AED 8,000–10,000 About the role Matrix AI is looking for a hands-on Backend Engineer with practical experience integrating AI into applications to join Qanoni, our UAE legal technology platform. You will work with the founder, legal professionals, and our existing development lead to improve backend services and AI workflows, investigate product issues, and turn legal feedback into tested improvements. This role suits someone who enjoys understanding an existing codebase, solving practical problems, and following changes through implementation, testing, and release. Our development lead will support onboarding, architecture decisions, code reviews, and deployment. Your responsibilities • Develop and maintain backend services using TypeScript and Node.js. • Work with PostgreSQL, APIs, authentication, permissions, document storage, and background processing. • Integrate and improve LLM-powered workflows, including document processing, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool calling, and conversation context. • Investigate incorrect AI outputs and help identify whether the issue comes from document processing, retrieval, application logic, or model behaviour. • Work with legal professionals to translate feedback into clear development tasks and acceptance criteria. • Write automated tests and contribute to repeatable AI evaluations using representative cases and expected outcomes. • Improve logging, error handling, performance, and API usage efficiency. • Collaborate with the development lead on code reviews, releases, documentation, and knowledge sharing. • Protect confidential client information through appropriate data handling and access controls. Required experience and skills • Professional experience developing and maintaining production backend applications. • Strong TypeScript/JavaScript and Node.js skills. • Practical experience with PostgreSQL, API design, authentication, and automated testing. • Hands-on experience integrating LLM APIs into a working application, with an understanding of retrieval and conversation workflows. • Ability to read an existing codebase, reproduce issues, implement fixes, and verify results. • Experience with Git and collaborative code reviews. • Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD, and cloud deployment environments. • Fluent spoken English is required. • Full-time availability and willingness to work in Dubai. Preferred experience • AWS, Qdrant, and Next.js. • Document processing, OCR, and Word/PDF generation. • AI evaluation, structured outputs, and tool calling. • Legal technology or other document-intensive products. Prior legal knowledge is helpful but not required. You will work with our legal team to understand the relevant workflows and requirements. What success looks like Within your first three months, you should be able to: • Understand Qanoni’s main backend services and AI workflows. • Investigate assigned issues and deliver tested improvements with appropriate review. • Turn legal feedback into actionable tasks and acceptance checks. • Contribute to a repeatable evaluation process that helps the team detect regressions. • Document your changes and communicate progress clearly. Compensation Monthly salary: AED 8,000–10,000, depending on relevant experience and performance in the practical assessment.
