Database Platform Engineer- Sql Server

Position Summary We are looking for a Database Platform Engineer / Database Administrator who is first and foremost an engineer, coder, and automation specialist. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced with GitOps, Infrastructure as Code, scripting, automation, and platform engineering, while also possessing strong enterprise database administration expertise. This role is responsible for the operational support, maintenance, security, performance, availability, automation, and reliability of enterprise database platforms across production and non-production environments. The candidate will work closely with application, infrastructure, DevOps, security, and engineering teams to automate database operations, implement database changes, improve platform reliability, and optimize database performance. Key Responsibilities Database Administration & Change Management Implement and manage database changes including:DDL – CREATE, ALTER, DROPDCL – GRANT, REVOKE, role managementSchema changes and object migrationsIndex creation and modificationData model implementationReview database change requests and ensure adherence to engineering standards.Automate and execute database deployments through established CI/CD and GitOps processes.Support application deployments requiring database modifications.Implement database changes consistently across development, testing, staging, and production environments.Platform Engineering & Automation Develop automation and tooling for recurring DBA and database platform tasks.Build scripts and automation using Python, PowerShell, Bash, or similar languages.Apply GitOps and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) principles to database operations.Automate database provisioning, configuration, deployments, maintenance, and monitoring.Integrate database operations with CI/CD pipelines.Reduce manual DBA activities through engineering and automation.Develop reusable tooling, frameworks, and operational processes.Performance Engineering Monitor and analyze database performance and proactively identify bottlenecks.Tune SQL queries, stored procedures, indexes, and database configurations.Diagnose CPU, memory, I/O, locking, blocking, and concurrency issues.Perform capacity planning and resource optimization.Analyze workload patterns and recommend architectural improvements.Develop performance metrics and trend reports.Observability & Monitoring Maintain database monitoring and alerting platforms.Develop dashboards, metrics, health checks, and operational KPIs.Investigate database alerts and perform root cause analysis.Improve database observability through instrumentation and automation.Create automated health checks and operational runbooks.Reliability, HA & Disaster Recovery Support high-availability and disaster-recovery database configurations.Execute backup, restore, and recovery procedures.Participate in production support and incident response.Perform root cause analysis and post-incident reviews.Implement preventive measures to improve platform reliability.Ensure databases meet defined availability and recovery objectives.Security & Access Management Provision and manage database access following least-privilege principles.Manage database roles, permissions, and security controls.Support security audits, compliance, and regulatory requirements.Review privileged access and support access certification processes.Partner with security teams on vulnerabilities and remediation.Database Maintenance Perform and automate:Statistics updatesIndex maintenanceReorganizations and rebuildsData archival and purgingSpace managementDatabase patching and upgradesMonitor database growth and storage utilization.Maintain database housekeeping jobs and automation.Application & Engineering Team Support Partner with application developers on database design and usage.Troubleshoot application/database performance issues.Review database models and recommend improvements for scalability and maintainability.Support testing and validation of database changes.Act as a technical advisor to application engineering teams.Documentation & Governance Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and runbooks.Establish standardized database operational procedures.Document production issues, root causes, and lessons learned.Participate in architecture and technical design reviews.Ensure database platforms comply with enterprise standards.Required Technical Skills Database Technologies: Microsoft SQL ServerEngineering & Automation: Strong programming/scripting skillsPython, PowerShell, Bash, or equivalentGit / GitOpsCI/CDInfrastructure as CodeDatabase deployment automationAutomation frameworks and toolingDatabase Engineering: SQL performance analysis and tuningDatabase monitoring and observabilityBackup and recoveryHigh Availability / Disaster RecoveryDatabase security and access managementProduction troubleshootingOperating Systems: LinuxWindows ServerPreferred Experience 5+ years of enterprise database administration or database platform engineering experience.Strong software engineering and coding mindset.Experience supporting mission-critical production environments.Hands-on experience implementing DDL, DCL, schema changes, and database deployments.Experience with GitOps, CI/CD, automation, and Infrastructure as Code.Experience with high availability, disaster recovery, and performance engineering.Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.Experience working in regulated or highly controlled enterprise environments.Ability to work closely with application developers, DevOps, infrastructure, and security teams.Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is not a traditional DBA who primarily performs manual database administration.
