Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Civil / Environmental Engineer with a strong background in drainage, flooding, water resources and soils / erosion to join our Mine Closure and Water Rehabilitation team in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast.
You will work alongside our closure planners, landform designers and geomorphologists on projects across Queensland, New South Wales and nationally, applying your water engineering skills to one of the most interesting problems in the resources sector: how mine sites drain, flood, erode and behave as landforms long after operations end.
This is a fantastic role for an experienced water engineer looking to broaden into mine closure and waterway rehabilitation.
The role will include:
Lead surface water and flood assessments for operating and closing mine sites, including catchment hydrology, hydraulic (flood) modelling, and flood immunity and levee assessments.
Design closure drainage and water management infrastructure, including diversion drains, spillways, rock chutes, sediment basins and post-mining drainage networks that remain stable without ongoing maintenance.
Contribute to creek diversion and waterway rehabilitation design, working with our geomorphologists on channel form, stability assessment, erosion and scour protection, and riparian rehabilitation.
Contribute to natural landform design, including geofluvial and geomorphological considerations, and provide the hydrology and hydraulics inputs that underpin stable, natural drainage-based final landforms.
Contribute to soils and erosion assessments for rehabilitation and closure, including soil and spoil characterisation, management of sodic and dispersive materials, erosion modelling (e.g.
RUSLE / WEPP), topsoil and growth medium balances, cover design inputs, and erosion and sediment control (ESC) plans and design.
Undertake site water balance and final void / pit lake assessments to inform water management plans and closure outcomes.
Prepare and contribute to mine closure plans, Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plans (PRCPs), water management plans and other regulatory documentation against industry best practice, regulatory requirements and corporate standards.
Contribute to closure designs and closure cost estimates, including quantities and costing for civil and earthworks.
Collaborate with our national group of closure practitioners, including closure planners, engineers, geomorphologists and environmental scientists, in delivering our business strategy for Closure and Remediation.
Undertake site visits, field inspections and waterway assessments at client sites, including regional and remote locations.
Deliver and coordinate projects and proposals, including project management, technical review and mentoring of junior engineers.
Participate in client management and business development.
Qualifications
Ideally, you will have 7+ years of experience in civil or environmental engineering within consulting, with a strong background in drainage, flooding and/or water resources.
Experience in the resources sector is highly regarded, but we are equally keen to hear from strong water engineers wanting to move into mine closure.
In addition to this, you will also have:
A tertiary degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent.
RPEQ registration, or eligibility to obtain registration in the short term.
Demonstrated experience in hydrologic and hydraulic modelling (e.g.
TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, RORB / URBS / XP-RAFTS, DRAINS) and sound working knowledge of Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR 2019).
Experience designing drainage, flood mitigation, erosion and sediment control or water management infrastructure, including design drawings, specifications and quantities.
Experience in mine closure, rehabilitation, natural landform design (including geofluvial and geomorphological approaches), creek diversions or waterway assessment will be highly regarded, as will a genuine interest in developing in these areas.
Working knowledge of soils and erosion processes (e.g.
soil erodibility, dispersive and sodic soils), or experience working closely with soil scientists, is highly regarded.
A background in erosion and sediment control (ESC), including ESC planning and design, is highly regarded.
CPESC (Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control) or RSP-ESC (Registered Soil Practitioner – Erosion and Sediment Control) accreditation, or progress towards either, will be well regarded.
Familiarity with 12d Model, GIS, Deswik, flood modelling software (e.g.
TUFLOW, HEC-RAS) and GoldSim is desirable.
Demonstrated commercial acumen, including fostering client relationships and identification of new opportunities.
Demonstrated project management experience across all life stages.
Highly adaptable, big-picture view with an eye for detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to think outside the box.
Comfortable working collaboratively and within a team, thriving on new challenges, and able to work under pressure.
Strong communicator, both verbally and in written communication, including clear technical reporting.
Willingness to travel to regional and remote sites as required.
