Java Backend Developer

At VIG Re, we are transforming the way reinsurance business is supported through modern technology solutions. We are looking for an experienced Java Backend Developer who is passionate about cloud-native development, scalable architectures, and building secure, high-performance applications. As a Java Backend Developer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the high-performance services and APIs that power VIG Re’s digital platforms. The role focuses on building scalable, resilient, and secure microservices deployed on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). As part of our Core technology team, you will bridge the gap between business requirements and technical implementation, working closely with Application Owners, Data Engineers and SREs to deliver reliable cloud-native solutions while ensuring compliance with industry regulatory standards. What You Can Expect Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Java (Spring Boot/Quarkus) to support VIG Re’s core business logic and digital transformationImplement seamless connections between applications and Azure-native services (e.g., Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Service Bus, and Key Vault) ensuring high performance and securityDevelop and document robust RESTful APIs (OpenAPI/Swagger) that enable efficient data exchange between internal systems and external insurance partnersCollaborate with the SRE team to package applications into Docker images and manage their lifecycle within Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)Maintain high code standards through Test-Driven Development (TDD), automated unit/integration tests, and proactive code reviewsImplement application-level logging, tracing (using OpenTelemetry), and health checks to allow proactive monitoring within Azure MonitorEnsure all developed code follows Secure SDLC practices and meets strict industry requirements (GDPR, Solvency II)Participate in technical discussions with Data Engineers and SREs to align application architecture with platform and infrastructure goalsDeliver and maintain robust Java-based microservices using Spring Boot or QuarkusEnsure seamless integration with Azure services including Azure Service Bus, Cosmos DB and Azure SQLDesign, document and maintain secure, versioned RESTful or gRPC APIsContribute to a high-quality codebase through TDD, automated testing and observabilityIdentify opportunities to optimize performance and simplify complex workflowsPartner with SREs and business stakeholders to translate complex reinsurance logic into functional solutionsTroubleshoot and resolve application-level bugs and performance bottlenecks What we Expect University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical fieldProven experience developing enterprise-grade backend systems, ideally within financial services, insurance, or highly regulated sectorsAdvanced proficiency in Java (17+) and the Spring ecosystemExperience with Docker, Kubernetes (AKS), SQL and NoSQL databasesKnowledge of Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or RabbitMQKnowledge of OWASP secure coding practices, GDPR and regulated environmentsOracle Certified Professional: Java SE Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification is an advantageDeep technical expertise in building, scaling and securing modern application componentsDetail-oriented and focused on delivering high-quality workProactive and interested in the latest technologiesStrong communication, collaboration and networking skillsAnalytical and strategic thinker capable of translating complex concepts into actionable plansFluent in spoken and written English What we Offer A unique opportunity to work on modern cloud-native technologies within a leading international reinsurance company, collaborate with experienced professionals, contribute to strategic technology initiatives, and further develop your expertise in a flexible and international environmentProfessional development within a leading insurance group in Central and Eastern EuropeAn extensive benefits packageFlexible working hours for better work-life balanceA collaborative and supportive international team environmentCozy office spaces in the city of Prague providing a comfortable and focused work atmosphere
