The role is responsible for building and maintaining the backend services and data-processing components that support the high throughput platform's ingestion, transformation, and event-driven infrastructure. The Senior Java Developer will work closely with the Analytics Engineering function to ensure data flows reliably from raw events through to business-ready outputs. This is a hands-on engineering role within a small, focused team on a greenfield platform, with real influence over architecture and technical direction. Key Responsibilities Design, build, and maintain backend services and data-processing components supporting real-time event ingestion (player activity, transactions) across the platform.Apply strong software engineering fundamentals, including clean architecture, separation of concerns, and testable, maintainable code, to backend and data infrastructure work.Bring a functional programming mindset to development, favouring immutable data, higher-order functions, and composition over mutation where appropriate.Work with streaming and messaging technologies (Kafka) to support the platform's real-time data infrastructure.Collaborate with cloud data tooling including AWS, S3, Athena, and Iceberg to support scalable, reliable data pipelines.Partner closely with the Data team to ensure backend services and data models integrate cleanly across the platform.Contribute directly to architecture and technical direction; this is not a task-execution role, and input into design and approach is expected.Write thorough, well-structured tests covering normal cases, edge cases, and failure paths.Apply an automation-first mindset, reaching for scripted and tooled solutions over manual processes, and leveraging AI coding tools as part of the daily workflow. What We're Looking For Strong, demonstrable Java experience (Java 11+), ideally with exposure to Scala and functional libraries such as cats and cats-effect, considered a strong plus.Solid grounding in functional programming concepts, including higher-order functions, immutability, and composition, and a genuine preference for this style where it fits.Experience building services from first principles, including parsers, evaluators, or other language-processing components, rather than relying solely on high-level frameworks.Comfort working with Kafka and event-driven architectures.Familiarity with cloud data infrastructure (AWS preferred).Prior iGaming experience is a plus but not essential.Strong testing discipline and clear technical communication, comfortable explaining design decisions and trade-offs.
