Mobile App Developer Intern (Part-time) – Cross-Platform iOS & Android
Ness Corporation · Seven Hills, NSW · 2-3 days/week paid internship · On-site
About the role
Join our R&D team to help build and maintain the cross-platform mobile app used to set up, monitor and control Ness alarm, security and home-automation devices.
You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, product owners and testers, and see your work running on real hardware.
This role is ideal for a student or recent graduate who wants hands-on, mentored experience in mobile and IoT development.
What you’ll do
• Build and improve app screens and reusable UI components that work on both iOS and Android.
• Help implement features that talk to our devices, such as pairing, configuration and real-time status, over the local network and via our cloud service.
• Work with REST APIs and real-time (WebSocket) communication.
• Write and maintain unit and UI tests.
• Take part in code reviews, stand-ups and regular progress updates.
• Learn how our app, native platform code (Swift/Kotlin) and device firmware fit together, with guidance from senior engineers.
• Over time, contribute to build and release processes.
Our stack
Our app is built with a modern cross-platform framework ([React Native / Kotlin Multiplatform]), with platform-native code (Swift on iOS, Kotlin on Android) for networking, background services and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Some familiarity with any of these is a bonus, but you don’t need experience with all of them.
Our engineers will guide and mentor you.
In return, we’re looking for someone who is keen to learn independently and ask good questions.
What we’re looking for
• Currently studying, or recently completed, a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or a related field.
• Solid programming fundamentals in a modern language (e.g.
TypeScript/JavaScript, Kotlin, Swift, Java, or similar), including data structures and basic async or concurrent code.
• Some experience building a user interface, whether mobile, web or desktop, through coursework, personal projects or work.
• Basic understanding of how apps call web APIs (REST/JSON).
• Comfortable with Git.
• Curiosity and willingness to learn new domains, including networking, device protocols and embedded or IoT systems.
• Clear communication, and openness to giving and receiving feedback.
• Right to work in Australia, and available 2-3 days/week during the semester.
Nice to have (not required)
• Experience with React/React Native, Kotlin/Android, Swift/iOS or Flutter.
• Exposure to sockets, TCP/IP, WebSockets or other real-time communication.
• Experience writing automated tests.
• Interest in IoT, smart home or security technology.
• Personal projects, GitHub or published apps you’d like to show us.
Don’t meet every point? Apply anyway.
We care more about your fundamentals and curiosity than your tool list.
What you’ll get
• A dedicated mentor and regular code reviews.
• Work on a production app that controls real devices in customers’ homes.
• Access to our R&D team, test labs and hardware.
• Flexible hours around your studies.
• A potential pathway to a graduate or part-time role.
How to apply
Send your Resume, a short note about why you’re interested, and any GitHub or project links to us.

Why join Ness
Ness has been designing and manufacturing security technology in Australia since 1972.
What started as a family-run alarm installation business has grown into one of the country's leading designers and manufacturers of alarm systems, detectors and security products, and it is still family-led today.
Engineering you can see and touch.
Ness designs its own products in-house, from alarm panels and motion detectors to wireless devices, access control, home automation, intercoms and medical alarms.
Our in-house R&D team has developed many award-winning products, and our own manufacturing facility builds them, so your firmware ends up in products made right here.
Everything under one roof.
Our head office in Seven Hills, NSW, covers more than 5,000 square metres and brings together R&D, automated PCB manufacturing, in-circuit and optical test, and distribution.
Few places in Australia offer a student this level of exposure to the full product lifecycle.
Quality that matters.
We've held ISO 9001 accreditation since 1992 and are certified to manufacture intrinsically safe products.
Beyond security, our contract manufacturing work spans automotive, mining, telecommunications and medical clients, and our products are exported to Europe, the USA and South East Asia.
People who stay.
We have more than 100 staff nationally, with branches in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
Our team members stay with us for over 10 years on average, and staff turnover is very low, which says a lot about the working environment.
The details
• Paid role: This is a paid, casual part-time position with negotiable pay based on your skills and experience
• Flexible around your studies: We'll work with you to fit your hours around university, with two or three days per week
• Location: Our head office in Seven Hills, NSW
