Senior Software Engineer (Global)
About HistoriqHistoriq’s mission is to get history out of boxes and help cultural heritage professionals make a bigger impact at their organizations.
We work with archives, libraries, museums, and other organizations responsible for historical collections to bring more of their physical and digital materials into view.
Our work combines archival expertise, digitization, and purpose-built technology to modernize how collections are arranged, described, managed, and discovered.
Historiq includes both archivist-led services and Historiq Una, our collections management platform.
Across both, our goal is the same: help the people who care for collections work more effectively and make more history accessible.
The roleAs a Senior Software Engineer at Historiq, you’ll help design and build the products and systems that support our platform.
The role spans frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure work.
You may build new product features, improve existing workflows, design APIs and data models, or work on systems for collaboration, media processing, desktop-to-cloud workflows, and long-running background processing.
You’ll work closely with the rest of the team to make practical technical decisions, improve the reliability and maintainability of our systems, and help shape how we build software as Historiq grows.
What you'll doBuild and ship product features across frontend and backend systems.Design and maintain APIs, services, data models, and database migrations.Develop web experiences for digitization, archival processing, collaboration, and publishing.Build and improve real-time, multi-user product experiences.Design and maintain background jobs and asynchronous workflows for long-running and computationally intensive work.Improve systems that coordinate retries, failures, progress, and state across distributed workflows.Work on large-file, image, and media-processing systems.Contribute to desktop software that connects local digitization workflows with our cloud platform.Integrate AI capabilities into product workflows where they are useful and reliable.Improve performance, reliability, security, testing, and observability.Investigate production issues across system boundaries and own problems through resolution.Review code and technical designs and contribute to engineering standards and practices.Mentor other engineers and help improve the way the team designs, builds, and operates software. Our technologyWe work with a modern full-stack environment centered around Python, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, and cloud infrastructure.
A significant part of our product is built around rich, interactive web applications, including collaborative editing, real-time updates, complex client-side state, and workflows that span the browser and backend.
Our backend systems include APIs, relational databases, background job processing, and workflow orchestration for asynchronous and long-running work.
We also build systems for large-file and image processing, desktop-to-cloud workflows, and AI-assisted document processing.
You do not need prior experience with every technology we use.
We care more about strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems.
What we're looking forSignificant experience building and operating production software, typically 5+ years or equivalent experience.Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language and comfort working across different parts of the stack.Experience designing backend APIs and data models for production applications.Strong SQL and relational database fundamentals.Experience building modern web applications, especially interactive product experiences with complex client-side behavior.Experience with asynchronous or distributed systems, including background processing, retries, failure handling, and long-running workflows.Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containers, and production deployment environments.Strong testing and debugging habits across frontend, backend, and integration boundaries.A security-conscious approach to authentication, authorization, credentials, and customer data.Ability to take a loosely defined problem and turn it into a clear, reliable implementation.Good judgment about technical tradeoffs and when to simplify, refactor, or introduce new infrastructure.Clear written and verbal communication.Comfort working in a small team where engineers contribute across multiple parts of the product.Helpful experienceExperience in any of these areas is useful, but not required:
Rich text editors, collaborative applications, or other complex interactive interfaces.Real-time web applications.Image, video, PDF, or media-processing systems.Large-file upload and storage systems. Background jobs, task queues, workflow engines, or distributed processing.Desktop or cross-platform applications.AI/LLM systems, OCR, transcription, or computer vision.Digital asset management, digitization, archives, libraries, museums, or cultural heritage software.Cloud platforms and containerized applications.Early-stage product development. How we workWe build iteratively and directly with the people who use our products, including archivists and other cultural heritage professionals.
Their workflows and feedback shape what we build and how we improve it.
We work very collaboratively across a largely remote team, with cross-functional collaboration at every level of the company.
We care deeply about the problems we are solving and the impact we want to have: helping make more historical materials physically and digitally accessible, with richer description produced far more quickly.
We value accountability and teamwork in service of that mission.
