Work as an electrical engineer validating software that supports utility distribution-grid operations. You will design and execute test plans, cases, and scenarios across functional, integration, regression, and user-acceptance testing. A solid power-systems foundation is valued, while specific platform experience is not required.
Highlights
Apply electrical engineering knowledge to hands-on testing of software used in utility grid operations. The role provides practical experience with power systems technology, multiple types of software testing, and an opportunity to learn specialized grid-management tools on the job.
Description
Title: Electrical Engineer
Location: Birmingham, AL-4 days onsite -Fridays remote
Expected Duration: 6+ Months Job Description: Are you an electrical engineer who enjoys digging into how systems work and making sure they work right? We're looking for an engineer with a solid power systems foundation and some testing experience to help validate the software that utility operators rely on every day to keep the grid running.
You'll work on a GE distribution management platform and related utility tools, so you'll be able to apply your engineering knowledge in a hands-on way while building valuable experience in grid operations technology.
Prior experience with these specific tools isn't required.
If you're curious and detail-oriented and understand how the distribution grid works, we'll help you learn the rest.
What You'll Do
Help design and run test plans, test cases, and test scenarios for utility grid software
Take part in functional, integration, regression, and user acceptance testing
Use your electrical engineering background to confirm that real-world grid operations, such as switching, outage response, and network modeling, behave as expected in the software
Document test results and track issues through resolution with technical teams, business users, and vendors
Check that data flows correctly between connected utility systems such as SCADA, GIS, and outage management
Review requirements and make sure test coverage is complete and traceable
Support system upgrades, new releases, and go-live readiness
Collaborate with distribution operators, fellow engineers, and application teams to turn real operating scenarios into meaningful tests
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field
Understanding of electric distribution systems, power flow, substations, SCADA, or grid operations
Some experience writing or executing test cases, validating systems, or documenting technical results (academic, co-op, field, or professional experience all count)
Clear communication skills and comfort working with engineers, operators, and vendors
Eagerness to learn complex software and operational workflows
Nice to Have
Exposure to utility applications such as GE ADMS, GE GridOS, EMS, DMS, OMS, or SCADA platforms
Familiarity with distribution concepts like FLISR, switching operations, or outage management
Experience with test or defect management tools such as qTest, Jira, Azure DevOps, or HP ALM
Experience with SQL, data validation, APIs, or test automation
Background working in Agile or vendor-led project environments
