About The Role
The Senior Staff AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development and deployment of large-scale AI systems that redefine banking services.
This remote-eligible position is integral to the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, which is at the heart of Capital One’s AI strategy.
As a senior member of the team, you will collaborate with cross-disciplinary professionals—including research scientists, engineers, and product managers—to design innovative AI solutions that enhance customer interactions and operational efficiencies.
Your expertise will drive the architecture, optimization, and governance of foundational AI models, ensuring they are responsible, scalable, and aligned with the company’s strategic objectives.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields, complemented by extensive experience in AI and machine learning development.
A minimum of 10 years of programming experience with languages such as Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java is required.
Candidates with a Master’s degree and at least 8 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
Demonstrated leadership in designing AI platforms, deploying scalable solutions on cloud infrastructure, and influencing cross-functional teams is essential.
Industry recognition through patents, publications, or open-source contributions is highly valued.
A deep understanding of AI model optimization, responsible AI practices, and experience with agentic AI systems will set candidates apart.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences are critical for success.
Responsibilities
Partner with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that transform customer engagement and operational workflows.Design, develop, test, and deploy AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, multi-agent workflows, similarity search, and observability tools.Leverage a broad spectrum of open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, and PyTorch to build scalable solutions.Innovate and implement state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to enhance performance metrics such as scalability, latency, throughput, and cost-efficiency.Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap for foundational AI systems, aligning with enterprise goals and industry best practices.Define and lead the implementation of AI architecture standards, integrating research breakthroughs into reliable production ecosystems.Establish and oversee AI safety, transparency, and governance standards across the organization to ensure ethical and compliant AI deployment.Drive multi-year platform initiatives that unify data, compute resources, and model lifecycle management within a cohesive enterprise AI architecture.Mentor senior technical leaders, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous learning in AI engineering and research teams.
