Our ideal candidate We are seeking a hands-on Test Engineering Manager with a demonstrated commitment to quality and the ability to lead while contributing directly to day-to-day work. This is a true player-coach role where you will mentor and develop others while staying deeply involved in the test engineering work. The right candidate is a leader who places high value on quality, contributes directly to the team's daily work and would rather build than delegate. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer, you will manage a strong team of two test engineers while remaining an active contributor. About the Role You’ll lead the test strategy, deciding what and how we test across our SaaS and on-premise products, help shape forward-looking technical solutions, and work closely with engineering and other teams to ensure alignment on priorities, strategy, and roadmaps. Most of your time will go to hands-on test engineering: designing and writing automated tests, digging into failures, and building forward-looking solutions that make our testing faster, more comprehensive, and more trustworthy. You'll also mentor and develop your team and partner with other teams to keep the team’s approach aligned with product roadmaps. Key Responsibilities Test Strategy and Implementation Demonstrate strategic approaches for developing test team objectives and priorities.Provide actionable assessments of overall product quality to other teams.Lead the team in deciding what and how to test via automation or manual verification.Design, write, and maintain automated tests, ensuring adequate and reliable coverage.Craft test cases from requirements to ensure coverage across functional, regression, integration, and non-functional testing.Trace defects end-to-end from UI to persistence to verify data flow accuracy and system integrity, creating clear, reproducible bug reports.Design, execute, and interpret load, stress, and soak tests against realistic data volumes. Process, CI/CD, and Tooling Guide how testing fits into the wider engineering pipeline, maintaining and improving continuous testing and fast, trustworthy feedback.Evaluate and adopt testing tools and libraries pragmatically, favoring well-established options over bespoke frameworks.Analyze daily build and test results, triage failures and address flaky tests.Ensure test results are predictive of production behavior, filling gaps as they are discovered. Leadership and Collaboration Mentor and coach team members to build technical capability and grow their overall contribution.Partner with other teams to ensure issues are identified and remediated ahead of production release.Contribute to a feedback-rich culture by actively giving and asking for constructive feedback. Security and Compliance Testing Validate products meet regulatory, contractual, and policy-driven security requirements.Build and maintain test coverage for authentication, authorization, and data segregation, particularly where PHI and other regulated data are involved.Support audit and customer security review processes with evidence, documentation, and reproducible results. Required Background, Skills and Abilities Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in engineering, information technology, computer science, software engineering, or similar.Ten years testing in a team environment, delivering solutions to customers.Two years mentoring engineers, providing technical leadership, or managing engineering teams. Technical Abilities Ten years designing and maintaining automated tests using established frameworks such as Selenium, Playwright, or Cypress.Eight years working with CI/CD systems such as TeamCity, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.Five years applying object-oriented programming principles to maintainable test design; comfort reading and writing Java.Five years testing API-driven web applications.Expertise adopting and leveraging LLM-based testing approaches, including product code analysis, automation code generation, and internal productivity tools.Proficiency writing SQL against relational databases, ideally Postgres, to verify data correctness.Understanding of performance and scalability testing. Preferred Skills Priority will be given to candidates who have experience in Accessibility conformance testing against WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508.Testing for concurrency defects, including race conditions, deadlocks, and transaction isolation issues.Familiarity with AWS and production telemetry and monitoring.Experience in scientific, clinical, or research software environments.Experience testing software subject to regulatory or contractual security requirements such as SOC 2, FISMA, HIPAA, or ISO 27001.
