Description
Aplin has partnered with an established Canadian manufacturer serving the nuclear industry to recruit a Senior Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical Fabrication for its Niagara Falls, Ontario operation.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mechanical/manufacturing engineering professional who enjoys working close to production and translating complex engineering requirements into practical, executable manufacturing solutions.
The successful candidate will play an integral role within the Fabrication Engineering team, converting customer and design requirements into complete, production-ready fabrication packages while working closely with Production, Quality, Procurement and Engineering.
The Opportunity
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical Fabrication will bridge the gap between engineering design and shop-floor execution.
You will be responsible for developing and releasing fabrication drawings, material Bills of Materials (BOMs), manufacturing sequences, ERP routings and production orders while supporting inspection requirements, tooling, fixtures, equipment selection and manufacturing process improvements.
This is a hands-on engineering position suited to someone who understands how components are actually fabricated and manufactured and can identify and resolve manufacturability challenges before they affect production.
Key Responsibilities
Review and interpret customer design specifications, fabrication specifications, drawings and technical requirements.Identify and resolve design ambiguities and manufacturability constraints early in the project lifecycle.Provide real-time engineering support to Production to resolve fabrication and manufacturing challenges.Develop, review and release general arrangement and detailed fabrication drawing packages.Ensure fabrication packages are technically accurate, complete and ready for production.Develop and maintain accurate material BOMs, including material specifications, piece-part processing requirements and associated manufacturing information.Develop manufacturing routings, fabrication sequences and operation requirements in collaboration with Production.Create and maintain production orders, ERP BOMs, manufacturing routings and associated production documentation.Develop engineering inputs for Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and prepare QC inspection documentation supporting design and in-process inspection requirements.Work closely with Procurement regarding material requirements, supplier capabilities and sourcing considerations.Develop procurement technical specifications for materials, equipment and externally sourced manufacturing requirements.Participate in design and manufacturability reviews for new and existing products.Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Inspection (DFI) principles.Recommend practical design alternatives that improve manufacturability, quality, cost, safety and production efficiency.Design jigs, fixtures and tooling to improve safety, quality, efficiency and manufacturing repeatability.Support welding, machining, forming, coating, assembly and inspection activities.Evaluate fabrication methods and manufacturing capabilities based on cost, schedule, quality and safety requirements.Support equipment and tooling selection for manufacturing operations.Participate in plant equipment and machine design associated with capital and operational improvement projects.Perform tolerance stack-up studies, fit-up evaluations and assembly interference assessments.Participate in root-cause investigations and corrective actions related to fabrication, manufacturing and engineering issues.Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing fabrication cycle times, engineering rework and production interruptions while improving quality and repeatability.Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related mechanical engineering discipline.7+ years of relevant engineering experience combining mechanical design/CAD with practical manufacturing or fabrication experience.Experience within heavy fabrication, industrial manufacturing, engineered equipment or a similar production environment is strongly preferred.C.E.T.
or EIT designation is considered an asset.Strong hands-on SolidWorks and PDM experience.Strong mechanical drafting and fabrication drawing capabilities.Demonstrated understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Inspection (DFI).Strong knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication processes, including welding, machining, forming, coating and mechanical assembly.Ability to interpret GD&T and welding symbols.Experience developing and maintaining multi-level BOMs, manufacturing routings and production orders within an ERP environment.Experience evaluating manufacturing capabilities and selecting appropriate fabrication methods based on cost, schedule, quality and safety.Experience performing tolerance stack-up studies, fit-up evaluations and assembly interference assessments.Experience developing technical specifications and manufacturing documentation.SolidWorks Simulation or other Finite Element Analysis experience is preferred.SolidWorks Inspection experience is considered an asset.Plant equipment or machine design experience is considered an asset.Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience working with ERP systems.Nuclear and Code Experience
Previous nuclear manufacturing experience is highly desirable but is not necessarily required for a candidate with strong heavy fabrication and manufacturing engineering experience.
Knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code requirements, including Sections II, III and VIII, as well as CSA N285, CSA N299, B51 and other applicable nuclear, fabrication and pressure-boundary standards, is considered a significant asset.
Candidates coming from other highly regulated manufacturing environments such as pressure vessels, power generation, aerospace, defence, heavy industrial equipment or engineered-to-order manufacturing may also be well suited to this opportunity.
What You Bring
You are a practical, production-focused mechanical/manufacturing engineer who is equally comfortable working with engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation and shop-floor personnel.
You understand that a successful design must not only meet technical requirements—it must also be manufacturable, inspectable, safe, repeatable and efficient to produce.
You bring strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven manufacturing environment.
You communicate effectively with Engineering, Production, Quality, Procurement, suppliers and other stakeholders and are comfortable taking ownership of technical issues through resolution.
You also demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety, product quality and continuous improvement.
Success in the Role
Success will be measured by the accurate and timely release of fabrication drawing packages, material BOMs, production orders and manufacturing documentation; minimizing engineering-related production interruptions, NCRs and rework; maintaining strong technical and quality compliance; and identifying opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, tooling, equipment, quality and engineering cycle times.
Why Consider This Opportunity
This position provides the opportunity to work on technically complex, highly engineered products within Canada’s growing nuclear manufacturing sector.
You will have direct visibility into how your engineering work translates into shop-floor execution and will play an important role in improving manufacturability, production readiness, quality and operational performance.
If you are a Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineer with strong SolidWorks capabilities and practical heavy fabrication experience who enjoys solving real-world manufacturing challenges, Aplin welcomes the opportunity to speak with you.
Compensation
