Description

We’re looking for an exceptional systems thinker who believes AI has fundamentally changed how software should be built. We are building an AI-first engineering organisation where engineers increasingly design systems, orchestrate agents and build the tools that build the features, rather than writing most code by hand. This isn't about being good at Cursor or Claude Code. We’re looking for a deeply experienced, hands-on engineer who has fundamentally redesigned the way they build because of AI: someone who thinks from first principles, designs excellent systems, creates their own agents and tooling, and can take an ambiguous problem from zero → architecture → build → production. You’ll help us move faster, but more importantly, you'll increase the capability of the engineering team. You won't simply execute our roadmap. We expect you to challenge it. Your purpose in our mission We’ve raised $17.8 million in Series A funding led by Google Ventures and joined by Khosla Ventures. They believe in our vision that the law should be accessible to everyone, and this is where your skills come in. We're hiring this person because we need another exceptional technical IC who can help us increase engineering velocity while challenging how and what we build. The core problem we're tackling is AI Agentic Workflows. We're Looking For Someone Who Is an exceptional systems thinkerSolves difficult problems from first principlesDesigns excellent technical systems before reaching for implementationUses AI creatively to multiply their own and the team's productivityBuilds agents, subagents, tooling and automation, not simply uses themThinks in backcasting: starting from the desired outcome and working backwardsHas a strong cut strategy: simplifying architecture and identifying the shortest sensible route to an outcomeMoves with urgency and cares deeply about momentumIs an exceptional hands-on IC who can own work end-to-endChallenges assumptions and proactively identifies opportunities that aren't already on the roadmapCan explain highly complicated technical ideas in remarkably simple languageIs curious, open-minded and constantly experimenting This is a capability hire, not a capacity hire. We're looking for someone who raises the technical bar of the team. This Is What You’ll Be Doing Your purpose is to increase Genie's engineering capability and speed through exceptional systems thinking and agentic leverage. You won't just ship features. You'll shape how we build products in the age of AI. Design exceptional systems from first principles: You'll own technical design for complex problems, identifying technical risks, designing happy paths and edge cases, considering security, and breaking architecture into sensible milestones rather than producing huge theoretical design documents. Build the machine that builds the feature: A conventional engineer might start by asking: “What already exists in the codebase that I can use to build this?”. We want you to also ask: “What tool could I build that would help build this for me?”. You'll create agents, subagents, software and workflows that allow AI to take on significantly more of the implementation process. Own products end-to-end: You'll take ambiguous problems from: problem → discovery → technical design → architecture → implementation → verification → production. We care much less about whether you call yourself a frontend or backend engineer than whether you can understand the whole system and design it exceptionally well. Orchestrate AI, don't just use it: You'll design, build and maintain agentic workflows that create genuine engineering leverage. Create 10x team leverage: The goal isn't simply to make yourself faster. You'll build systems and tools that increase the output of the people around you too. sharing knowledge, improving workflows and designing for collective intelligence. Challenge our roadmap: We don't want an engineer who waits for a PM to tell them what to build. Within 6–12 months, an exceptional person in this role will be identifying new ideas, technical opportunities and problems that the rest of us haven't even thought to put on the roadmap yet. You'll influence both engineering and product discovery. This is how we’ll set you up for success and the outcomes we expect from you We're a startup in an exceptionally dynamic stage of growth. The problems we're solving today may look very different in six months. We'll give you context, access and support, but we expect you to create clarity rather than wait for detailed instructions. By the end of your first month we would like you to: Understand Genie's engineering and product-development workflowGet deeply familiar with our agentic engineering approachUnderstand how we prioritise speed improvements and legal-quality improvementsBegin contributing to our agentic tooling and workflows By 90 days We Expect You To Be fluent in our development workflow and prioritiesIndependently identify when and where speed or legal-quality improvements should be madeOwn meaningful work end-to-endBuild/improve agentic tooling and workflowsBegin proactively contributing to product and technical direction By 6–12 months You'll Independently design and ship sophisticated AI-native systemsLead technical decisions within your areaCreate significant engineering leverage through agents and toolingIncrease the team's delivery velocityProactively challenge and improve the roadmapIdentify valuable opportunities that weren't obvious to the existing team We’ll continually develop and measure success on the below criteria: Systems & technical design quality: Can you understand complicated systems, identify the real problem and design elegant solutions from first principles? Agentic effectiveness: Are your agents, tools and workflows genuinely multiplying output, or are you simply using AI coding assistants? Engineering leverage: Are you building things that make the entire team more capable? Delivery & momentum: Are valuable things getting into production significantly faster because you're here? Product contribution: Are you identifying valuable problems and opportunities rather than simply implementing an existing roadmap? We are a start up in an exceptionally dynamic stage of our growth. We are a customer and employee led organisation. What this means is that we adapt to our customers' needs, and the problems we’re solving today could be very different in six months, or even by the end of this recruitment process. We also listen to our team as we empower you to have full autonomy of your role - you're the expert. You should expect to work with us on how your role develops, grows and changes throughout your time at Genie. It can be tough here because We move very fastProblems change quicklyThere are few precedents for this kind of engineeringYou won't always receive detailed specificationsYou'll need to create clarity from ambiguityWe expect engineers to think about what should be built, not simply how to build itOur engineering practices are evolving rapidly as AI capabilities changeYou'll be expected to challenge established thinking, including ours But we think you’ll love Working at a truly AI-first companyBuilding in ways much of the engineering industry is only beginning to discoverHaving radical ownership and autonomyWorking alongside ambitious, deeply curious buildersExperimenting with new engineering practices rather than following established playbooksBeing close to product and technical decisionsBuilding systems that can fundamentally multiply engineering outputChallenging the roadmap rather than receiving itShaping how Genie builds software in the age of AIHelping shape the future of legal infrastructure The skills you need to succeed in this role We're looking for an exceptional senior hands-on IC. But we're much more interested in evidence of engineering excellence than a collection of keywords on a CV. Exceptional systems thinking: You can understand complex systems and design excellent solutions from first principles. You think about: Architecture, Technical risk, Security, Happy paths, Edge cases, Scale, Simplicity, Milestones, Trade-offs. You know when architecture needs sophistication, and when the best engineering decision is to cut complexity entirely. Deeply AI-native engineering: You don't simply have "experience using AI coding tools." AI has materially changed how you engineer. You may already be: Building your own agents/subagents, Creating internal developer tooling, Building MCPs or other agent/tool interfaces, Automating parts of your development process, Orchestrating multiple agents etc. Exceptional hands-on engineering: You are still a builder. You can personally take something from zero through architecture, implementation and into production. We don't want someone whose seniority has taken them far away from the technical work. Strong product instinct: You don't think your responsibility ends when a ticket lands in Jira. You question assumptions, identify opportunities, understand the user/problem and contribute to what gets built, not merely how. Outstanding communication: You can explain something technically sophisticated in language almost anyone can understand. You are open-minded enough to have your own ideas challenged and confident enough to challenge ours (Don’t worry about ticking every single box on the list to be considered for this role.) Our Benefits Here’s just some of the benefits you can look forward to when you enter the Genie’s lamp: Generous Stock Options: We want all our genies to share in our success Private healthcare: To help keep you fit as a fiddleFully Remote Working: Work from anywhere your heart desires Unlimited book budget: Dive into an unlimited budget for business, law, or technology booksHome Office Setup: Equip your home office with the best – a top-of-the-range laptop, monitor, wireless keyboard, mouse, and a comfortable office chair.
