# Application Engineer ## About the Role Vibrant Planet is seeking an Application Engineer to build and evolve its wildfire resilience and utilities platforms. The role focuses on developing decision-support applications that help community protection, utility, and land management leaders evaluate and respond to wildfire and climate risk. You’ll work across an Elixir/Phoenix/LiveView/TypeScript stack with Postgres and geospatial data, translating wildfire science and scenario planning into intuitive applications. You’ll collaborate with Application Engineering, Product, Design, Data Engineering, Operations, Science, and Infrastructure teams to deliver features from technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iteration. ## Key Responsibilities * Design, build, and ship full-stack features across Elixir/Phoenix/LiveView, JavaScript, and Postgres. * Develop features for the core wildfire resilience platform and utilities applications. * Work with large geospatial datasets, including raster, vector, and tiled data. * Surface forest planning, scenario-building, and treatment-outcome insights through user-facing applications. * Partner with Product and Design to scope, refine, and deliver workflows for land managers, foresters, and partner organizations. * Own features end-to-end, including technical design, deployment, monitoring, and iteration based on user feedback. * Support platform reliability through code reviews, automated testing, observability, and on-call participation in the Sev process. * Collaborate with Environmental Analysis and Infrastructure teams to integrate geospatial models, including Pyrologix, ForSys/Patchmax, and canopy-height models. * Improve developer experience and engineering velocity through tooling, refactoring, and documentation. * Mentor and pair with engineers and participate in technical interviews as the team grows. ## Required Qualifications * 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production web applications. * Proficiency in Elixir, including OTP. * Proficiency with relational databases and SQL, with Postgres preferred. * Experience with database schema design, query optimization, and migrations. * Demonstrated ability to ship software features end-to-end in a collaborative, cross-functional environment. * Strong written and verbal communication skills. * Ability to scope and work through ambiguous problems with product managers, designers, and domain experts. * Comfort working in a fully remote, fast-paced startup environment. * Authorization to work in the United States without visa sponsorship. ## Preferred Qualifications * Experience with Phoenix and LiveView. * Experience building geospatial or map-based applications, including interactive maps and spatial UI patterns. * Experience with geospatial technologies and data, such as PostGIS, GDAL, GeoJSON, vector tiles, Mapbox/MapLibre, or tippecanoe. * Experience with AWS, Docker, and modern CI/CD workflows. * Background in climate technology, environmental science, GIS, forestry, or another mission-driven domain. * Previous experience working at an early- to mid-stage startup. ## Skills & Competencies * Elixir and OTP * Full-stack web application development * Phoenix and LiveView * JavaScript/TypeScript * Postgres and SQL * Database schema design and query optimization * Geospatial application development * Geospatial data processing * Automated testing and observability * CI/CD and deployment * Technical design and end-to-end feature ownership * Cross-functional collaboration * Communication and problem-solving * Mentoring and technical interviewing ## Education & Experience **Experience:** 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production web applications. **Education:** No specific educational requirement is stated in the source job description. ## Work Arrangement & Schedule * **Work Arrangement:** Fully remote * **Location:** United States * **Visa Sponsorship:** Not available.
