An investor-backed technology startup is seeking a hands-on staff software engineer to own document processing pipelines and application data while developing AI-powered product capabilities. You'll work across applied machine learning, data pipelines, backend infrastructure, and internal review tools, helping turn complex technical documents into actionable operational information.
Highlights
Join a small, investor-backed team with meaningful ownership from day one. Work across applied AI, data engineering, backend systems, and product features while solving practical challenges in a large, underserved industry.
Description
About Moat
Moat is headquartered in Lehi, Utah.
We are building the system of record for the built
environment, giving facilities teams complete visibility into the critical assets their buildings
depend on.
Our patent-pending AI engine turns the O&M manuals and construction submittals behind
every building into a living maintenance system, so teams can catch problems before something
breaks.
Investor-backed and growing, Moat already manages more than 50,000 assets across over 20 million
square feet for organizations ranging from K-12 school districts to national property portfolios.
We're a
small team going after a massive, underserved industry, and everyone here has real ownership from
day one.
The role
We're looking for a hands-on staff engineer to own our document processing pipeline and app data,
and to help build the features that use it.
You'll work across applied AI, data pipelines, backend
systems, and the tools our data reviewers use.
The challenge is making accurate, useful information
available across a growing number of customer assets without scaling manual work at the same rate.
What you'll work on
Own document sourcing, parsing, model-specific extraction, and the shared product library that supplies data to customer assets.Improve our use of LLMs, document layout, and images to extract complete maintenance procedures and warranty terms, with evidence tied to the right source and model.Extend our evaluation tools and reviewed reference datasets.
Compare approaches, catch regressions, and measure accuracy, processing cost, and reviewer effort.Make background processing and human review work reliably together, including retries, re-extraction, and safe updates to approved data.Build downstream features for troubleshooting, maintenance, warranties, and capital planning alongside the product team.Set technical direction, break larger problems into useful releases, and help other engineers through design discussions and code review. What you'll bringExperience leading complex software projects through production, with technical influence beyond your own code.Experience shipping and evaluating applied AI or ML systems, particularly LLMs, document understanding, or structured extraction from unstructured data.Strong backend skills in relational data modeling, asynchronous workflows, APIs, and production debugging.Judgment about when to use a model, deterministic logic, or human review, and a willingness to learn directly from data reviewers and customers.
How we work
Our stack is Go, Flutter, Postgres, and GCP.
Experience with a variety of languages and tools is
strongly valued; experience with our exact stack is not required.
We favor straightforward code, frequent small releases, and tests that reflect real behavior.
You'll have
a direct hand in what we build and how it works for customers.
We actively adopt new development tools and use LLMs heavily in coding.
Engineers own every
change they ship, though: you're expected to read and understand the code, verify its behavior, and be
able to explain and maintain it, including code generated by LLMs.
