The Role We're looking for an experienced Communications Engineer to provide specialist communications and systems engineering support to a major Defence capability modernisation initiative in Canberra. You'll contribute to capability documentation, technical standards, architectures and user needs that support the modernisation of a critical command and control communications system. You'll work collaboratively with Army, Joint, Defence Digital Group and industry stakeholders, analysing capability needs, assessing technical options, supporting risk reduction activities and informing acquisition and integration decisions. Key Responsibilities Support development and maintenance of capability documentation, including Operational Concepts, User Needs Statements, requirements and technical standards Provide specialist communications engineering advice on tactical communications, networking, satellite communications and cryptographic systems Analyse technical risks, constraints and opportunities, developing recommendations to inform capability decisions Support planning, coordination and execution of technical investigations, risk reduction activities, demonstrations, trials and evaluations Develop technical assessments, briefing material, decision support products and stakeholder engagement artefacts Engage with stakeholders across Army, Joint organisations, Defence Digital Group, industry and coalition partners Contribute to development and maintenance of system architectures, standards, integration guidance and design products Participate in technical and systems engineering working groups, forums and governance activities Review contractor deliverables and provide technical advice on suitability, maturity and alignment with requirements and standards Support assurance, governance, audit and reporting activities Provide technical support across the wider team as required Required Current NV1 security clearance Demonstrated experience in Defence communications, networking, ICT or systems engineering roles Knowledge of tactical communications, networking and relevant technologies Experience developing or reviewing technical documentation, requirements or engineering assessments Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills Ability to analyse technical risks, issues and integration challenges Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in communications, telecommunications, ICT or systems engineering Knowledge of the Defence Capability Lifecycle and governance processes highly regarded Experience supporting capability development, acquisition, integration or sustainment activities highly regarded Understanding of tactical networks and communications architectures highly regarded Experience supporting trials, demonstrations, evaluations or risk reduction activities highly regarded Familiarity with systems engineering methods, standards and architecture development highly regarded Degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, ICT, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or a related discipline highly regarded Engagement Details Location: Russell Offices, Canberra, ACT Extension options available 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2027 What We Offer With offices in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, we're a tight-knit team working across some of Australia's most critical Defence and national security programs.
