Description

About 808labs 808labs is a product studio in Riyadh and Dubai that builds and backs software companies for the Gulf. It operates through two arms. 808 Originals builds 808labs' own products in-house, and 808 Ventures partners with independent builders to launch theirs. The first 808 Originals product is Getti, a universal checkout app launching first in the UAE. Ignite is 808labs' multi-merchant checkout infrastructure: it lets apps and AI agents place orders with several online stores in a single cart, while the shopper stays in control of payment. Ignite is the platform Getti and other clients will run on. Purpose of the role Ignite needs an engineer who can own the hard parts of multi-merchant checkout: connecting to commerce providers, authorising and capturing payments, handling refunds and partial failures, and keeping webhooks and order state reliable under real traffic. Getti's current checkout depends on a third-party provider; Ignite will become the routing and connection layer behind that experience. This role exists because those integrations do not yet have a dedicated owner beside the CTO. The first interview pipeline is already moving for a candidate with backend, webhook and WhatsApp AI agent experience; this page defines the bar for that hire and any later candidates. Responsibilities Multi-merchant checkout and payments - Design and implement flows that authorise and capture payment across one or more merchants in a single shopper checkout. - Handle refunds, partial refunds, cancellations and split shipments without double-charging or losing order state. - Build robust failure handling: provider timeouts, one merchant rejecting while another accepts, duplicate or out-of-order webhooks, and safe retries. Provider and merchant integrations - Build and maintain integrations with commerce providers and merchant platforms (APIs, webhooks, sandboxes and production cutovers). - Own API contracts, fixtures and reconciliation so Getti and other clients can trust order and payment status. - Work with the CTO on Shoppable and future Ignite Phase 1 connections across the GCC. Backend reliability - Write production-quality backend code (likely Python/FastAPI or equivalent) with clear observability, idempotency and audit trails. - Partner with the Getti iOS engineer so mobile, AI and checkout stay aligned on status and error cases. - Document integration runbooks so support and ops can diagnose payment and order issues quickly. Requirements - Several years of backend engineering experience shipping production APIs. - Hands-on experience with webhooks, async jobs and idempotent payment or order flows. - Experience with payments or checkout beyond simple subscriptions: authorise/capture, refunds, failure recovery. - Comfort reading provider docs, sandbox certification and production incident debugging. - Clear written English for API notes, runbooks and Slack with a small remote team. Nice to have - Multi-merchant marketplace, aggregator or universal-checkout experience. - GCC payments or commerce provider exposure (for example Paymob, local PSPs, regional marketplaces). - Experience building AI agents that call commerce or messaging APIs (WhatsApp or similar). - Familiarity with Python, FastAPI, Docker and GitHub Actions
