A financial services organization is looking for an infrastructure leader to own a production data platform. The role focuses on stability, capacity, performance, and secure data movement across enterprise systems.
Highlights
Hands-on technical ownership role focused on infrastructure reliability, performance optimization, and large-scale data operations.
Description
The Role
A UK bank is migrating data to a new banking platform as part of a major integration programme.
The data migration platform that supports it is run as production infrastructure, and it needs a technical owner.
The successful candidate will be accountable for the performance, capacity and stability of that platform, and for making sure data is extracted safely from Oracle, mainframe and Windows Server sources.
You will work alongside database specialists and business unit teams and represent the platform in technical forums, boards and working groups.
This is a hands-on technical role, not a service management or governance role.
We need someone who understands how the infrastructure behaves under load and can prove it with data.
Key Responsibilities
Own the data migration platform as production infrastructure, covering performance, capacity, resilience and operational stabilityRun capacity and performance management across the platform: monitoring utilisation, forecasting demand and identifying resource contention before it causes problemsAnalyse performance across VMware, Windows Server, Oracle and mainframe components, and understand how a change in one layer affects the othersMake sure data is extracted safely and reliably from mainframe and Oracle sources, protecting both the source systems and the integrity of the migrationWork with database specialists and domain SMEs, holding your own in technical discussions and challenging assumptions where neededRepresent the platform in boards, working groups and go/no-go decisions, giving clear, evidence-based views on risk, capacity and readinessBuild and maintain capacity models, performance reporting and stakeholder packs (spreadsheets, decks and metrics) that turn technical data into decisionsPush back, negotiate and escalate when platform stability or migration timelines are at risk
Essential Experience
A technical infrastructure background, with a career built on hands-on infrastructure rather than service or process managementCapacity and performance management as a core, proven strength, including forecasting, modelling, contention analysis and right-sizingStrong working knowledge of VMware and virtualised environments, including how to diagnose performance and contention issues at host and VM levelBroad infrastructure knowledge across Windows Server, storage, databases and mainframe, with enough depth in each to understand how they interactPractical understanding of mainframe environments, particularly batch processing and data extractsExperience in banking or another regulated environmentThe technical credibility and gravitas to hold your own with SMEs and application owners, and to challenge and escalate appropriately
Desirable Experience
Oracle database awareness (deep DBA work is covered by specialists)Experience with Splunk or comparable monitoring and data platformsHands-on use of capacity and monitoring tools such as vROps/Aria Operations, TeamQuest, Metron Athene, BMC TrueSight, Sightline or DynatracePrevious involvement in bank integrations, platform migrations or large-scale data migration programmes
What we're looking for:
We want a generalist infrastructure professional with real technical depth.
You should be comfortable moving between VMware, Windows, storage, database and mainframe conversations without claiming to be the expert in each.
You should also be able to explain clearly what the numbers say and what needs to happen next.
This role is not suited to profiles that are mainly ITSM, governance or process-led without an underlying technical background.
It is also not suited to deep single-technology specialists.
This is a hybrid working role based in London or Edinburgh 2 days per week.
