Lead Mechanical Engineer

Insight Global is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer (Owner's Engineer) to support a major industrial capital project currently advancing through detailed engineering and execution. Acting as the owner's technical representative, this individual will provide mechanical engineering leadership and oversight, ensuring engineering deliverables, equipment selections, and technical decisions align with project goals, operational requirements, industry standards, and long-term reliability objectives. The Lead Mechanical Engineer will work closely with EPC contractors, equipment vendors, operations and maintenance teams, and project stakeholders to review designs, support procurement activities, and provide technical guidance throughout engineering, construction, commissioning, and startup. This is a highly collaborative role requiring strong technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to influence outcomes across multidisciplinary teams. This is a multi-year contract opportunity running through project completion in 2030. Candidates may be based in Calgary or Regina, with a preference for Regina-based resources. The role follows a hybrid work model, with an expectation of four days per week in the office, along with occasional travel for vendor visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities. Day-to-Day Responsibilities Serve as the Owner’s Engineer and subject matter expert for all mechanical engineering activities.Review and provide technical oversight of EPC contractor deliverables, including:P&IDsMechanical specificationsEquipment data sheetsTechnical packagesVendor drawings and documentationParticipate in design reviews, HAZOPs, model reviews, constructability reviews, and multidisciplinary engineering workshops.Evaluate major equipment selections, including:CompressorsPumpsPressure vesselsHeat exchangersPiping systemsSupport technical bid evaluations and vendor selection processes.Review technical queries, change requests, and engineering deviations.Interface with equipment suppliers and participate in vendor meetings throughout procurement and manufacturing.Review inspection reports and manufacturing progress updates.Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) activities and witness testing at vendor facilities as required.Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to develop:Asset care strategiesIntegrity management plansReliability and maintenance philosophiesProvide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup activities.Mentor junior engineers and support cross-functional project teams. Required Skills & Experience Education & Certifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.Canadian Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation required.10+ years of mechanical engineering experience within heavy industrial environments.Previous experience supporting large capital projects through detailed engineering and execution phases.Strong understanding of:Rotating equipmentStatic equipmentPressure vesselsHeat exchangersPumps and compressorsPiping systems and mechanical design practicesExperience reviewing and approving engineering contractor deliverables.Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (ASME, API, CSA, etc.).Experience participating in equipment procurement, vendor reviews, and technical bid evaluations.Strong understanding of equipment reliability, maintainability, and lifecycle management.Ability to challenge engineering decisions and offer practical solutions.Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a large project environment. Nice-to-Have Experience Previous Owner's Engineer experience on major industrial projects.Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) project experience.Refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, or power generation industry experience.Asset integrity, reliability engineering, and maintenance strategy development experience.Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and vendor inspection experience.EPC project execution experience with large tier 1 engineering firms.Experience supporting commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities.Familiarity with CO₂ compression, transportation, and process equipment systems.
