Senior Software Engineer - Backend/Full Stack London | Hybrid | Up to £100k + Bonus We’re working with an established technology business looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join one of its product engineering teams. You’ll work on customer-facing technology where performance, reliability and scalability matter, with the opportunity to own meaningful engineering problems and influence how systems are designed and built. This is a hands-on role. You’ll still be writing code, solving difficult problems and getting close to the technology, while helping shape technical decisions and supporting other engineers. What You’ll Be Doing You’ll take ownership of engineering problems from the early stages through to production. You’ll be: Designing and building reliable backend services and APIs.Working primarily with Java as the main backend language.Designing systems that can scale while remaining maintainable and resilient.Working with distributed and event-driven architectures.Investigating performance issues and identifying bottlenecks.Thinking through architecture, system design and technical trade-offs.Improving monitoring, observability and operational reliability.Writing well-tested, maintainable production code.Working across the stack when needed, including modern frontend technologies.Collaborating closely with Engineering, Product and other technical teams.Reviewing code and contributing to engineering standards.Mentoring and supporting other engineers.Using modern AI-assisted development tools as part of the engineering process. About You You’ll have strong experience building production backend software, but your current language doesn’t need to be Java. You could come from Java, C#, .NET, Go, Python or another modern backend language. What matters is that you have strong engineering fundamentals and are genuinely interested in moving into Java and using it as your main backend language day to day. You’ll be comfortable with: Data structures, algorithms and problem solving.Object-oriented design and software engineering principles.Designing and developing APIs.SQL and relational databases.System design and distributed systems.Performance, scalability and reliability.Testing and production-quality engineering.Taking an unclear problem, asking the right questions and shaping a sensible technical approach.Explaining technical decisions and trade-offs clearly.Working collaboratively with other engineers and product teams.Taking ownership of technical problems through to production. Useful Experience You don’t need to match every technology. Experience with some of the following would be useful: Java and Spring BootAWS or another major cloud platformReact, JavaScript or TypeScriptKafka or other event-driven technologiesNoSQL databasesDocker and KubernetesCI/CDMonitoring and observabilityAI-assisted coding tools The Environment You’ll join an engineering environment where Senior Engineers are trusted to own problems rather than simply complete tickets. That means understanding the problem first, asking the right questions, challenging assumptions when needed and considering different approaches before deciding how something should be built. You’ll work closely with other engineers and product teams, while having the autonomy to make meaningful technical decisions and help improve how software is designed and delivered. There’s a strong focus on engineering fundamentals, modern development practices and building software that remains reliable as it grows. Package & Working Pattern Salary: Up to £100k base + bonus Location: London Working Pattern: Hybrid - 1x/week onsite There’s also a broader benefits package and support for continued technical development.
