Senior Product Design Engineering Consultant

Summary PDD is seeking an experienced Senior Consultant in Product Design Engineering to provide contract or freelance services on projects associated with our London studio. The anticipated engagement is for three months or longer, with the scope and terms to be agreed. The contractor should be able to balance usability and aesthetic appeal with technical functionality, drawing on sound knowledge of mechanics, materials and manufacturability, strong CAD skills, and experience of drawings and specifications. Assignments may include technical project leadership and responsibility for agreed design deliverables, working with PDD project contacts to coordinate inputs and review outcomes. Scope of Services • Interpret project briefs and define requirements; prepare proposals, project plans and cost estimates within the agreed scope • Research, source and specify applicable technologies, suppliers, materials and processes • Create inventive, appropriate and practical technical concepts and assess feasibility • Coordinate inputs from human sciences, industrial design and mechanical engineering to develop appropriate and meaningful designs • Develop reliable and robust design solutions, including 3D CAD modelling, basic engineering calculations, risk analysis and coordination of prototypes for testing • Detail and specify designs for manufacture, including engineering drawings, tolerances and specifications • Prepare and maintain agreed project documents, including presentations, reports and schedules • Communicate with suppliers and liaise with and present to clients within the authority agreed for the assignment • Coordinate agreed project activities, budgets and milestones, liaising with PDD on resource requirements and progress • Meet the PDD quality system requirements and applicable regulatory requirements relevant to the contracted services, together with applicable site safety, confidentiality and information security requirements Requirements The contractor should have the technical, communication and commercial expertise to deliver successful product development assignments and communicate effectively with clients and project collaborators. Core expertise and qualifications: • First or upper second class bachelor’s degree in Product Design Engineering, or equivalent qualification or relevant professional experience • Skilled in 3D CAD modelling (Solidworks) with strong surfacing ability • Good sketching ability (to explore and communicate technical concepts) • Familiar with materials and processes including moulding, machining, casting, fabrication and assembly • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills • Experience of managing technical projects and coordinating contributions from other specialists Additional relevant experience: • Application of first principles engineering calculations to support design decisions • The ability to use Adobe Illustrator and render designs for presentation • Projects with significant quality & regulatory requirements (e.g., medical devices) • Practical workshop and lab skills; machining, fitting, assembly, testing, etc. • Arduino and/or Python coding About PDD PDD is a leading product and experience innovation consultancy.
