Software/Product Intern

Company Description Quadmates is a student networking platform designed to help university students find study partners, form effective study groups, and stay accountable to their academic goals. Through features such as messaging, study tracking, and shared goals, Quadmates aims to make it easier for students to build consistent study habits and supportive academic communities. As an early-stage edtech product, Quadmates gives team members the opportunity to work directly on a growing platform and contribute to decisions that affect the product, user experience, and future direction of the company. Role Description Quadmates is looking for a Software/Product Intern to help design, build, test, and improve the platform. This is a remote role with hands-on involvement in both software development and product development. The intern will work directly on a real web product and contribute to features, bugs, user workflows, technical improvements, and product experiments. Responsibilities may include: Building and improving frontend and backend featuresWriting clean, maintainable, and documented codeDebugging technical issues and testing new functionalityWorking with databases, APIs, and third-party integrationsSupporting authentication flows, JWT-based access control, environment variables, and secure handling of user dataImproving user flows and overall product usabilityReviewing and organizing user feedbackHelping prioritize product improvements and future featuresBuilding small prototypes and experimentsContributing to technical and product documentationCollaborating with other members of the Quadmates teamBecause Quadmates is an early-stage product, interns may have the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of features and contribute directly to product decisions. Qualifications Experience with at least one programming language such as JavaScript, Python, Java, or similarUnderstanding of core software development and software design conceptsFamiliarity with Git or another version-control systemBasic understanding of databases, data modeling, and queryingExperience debugging software and testing functionalityStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to work independently in a remote environmentStrong communication and collaboration skillsCurrently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related fieldInterest in education technology, student communities, or early-stage startupsNice to Have Experience with React or another modern frontend frameworkExperience with Supabase, Firebase, PostgreSQL, or similar technologiesExperience building web applications, personal projects, or hackathon projectsFamiliarity with APIs, authentication systems, or application security conceptsInterest in UI/UX, product management, or product strategyCompensation & Equity Opportunity This position is currently unpaid while Quadmates is in its early-stage development and growth phase. Team members gain hands-on experience contributing to a real software product, including feature development, product testing, debugging, authentication, application security, user feedback, and product experimentation. Quadmates maintains an equity participation plan for team members who make significant long-term contributions to the company. Eligibility is based on contribution, continued involvement, and company growth milestones, which may include expansion beyond Ontario and other major stages of platform growth. Equity is not automatic and is awarded only when the applicable contribution and company milestones are met. As Quadmates grows, there may also be opportunities for paid responsibilities, expanded roles, or longer-term involvement with the company.
