A senior data engineering role focused on migrating legacy analytical systems to modern cloud data platforms. The position involves data modeling, pipeline development, and preserving business logic during transformation.
Highlights
Opportunity to work on a complex data modernization project involving cloud platforms, analytics migration, and advanced data engineering practices.
Description
About the project
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer with strong SAP BW and Data Warehouse experience to support the migration of an existing SAP BW analytical landscape to a modern cloud data platform.
Responsibilities:
Analyze and reverse-engineer existing SAP BW content — InfoCubes, DSOs, InfoObjects, and BW transformations (including ABAP routines) — to document the data flows and business logic they implementMigrate legacy DWH analytical layers to a modern cloud platform: rebuild fact and dimension tables, transformation pipelines, and embedded business logic as SQL-based ELTRe-implement BW transformation logic in dbt on Snowflake, ensuring semantic accuracy — business rules embedded in legacy transformations are preserved, not reinterpretedDevelop and maintain dbt models, including Jinja templating and macros, following the project's established modeling standardsBuild and operate ELT orchestration workflows (Azure Data Factory, Apache Airflow, or equivalent)Validate migrated objects against the legacy system to confirm data and logic equivalence before cutoverWork embedded in an existing mixed internal/external Scrum team (3-week sprints), contributing to the team's object-migration throughput and delivery cadenceCollaborate with the Product Owner and internal engineers to clarify legacy logic, resolve ambiguities, and align on migration priorities
Qualifications
Must have:
Proven hands-on experience in data transformation within a DWH context — building and migrating analytical layers (fact/dimension tables, transformation pipelines, business logic translation); this is the primary criterion for the roleStrong SAP BW knowledge: ability to read and reverse-engineer BW structures (InfoCubes, DSOs, InfoObjects, BW transformations)Advanced SQL proficiency; hands-on experience implementing transformation logic as SQL-based ELT — dbt strongly preferredExperience with ELT orchestration tools (Azure Data Factory, Apache Airflow, or equivalent)Solid data warehousing fundamentals: dimensional modeling, slowly changing dimensions (SCD), partitioning strategiesAnalytical mindset with experience translating legacy DWH logic into modern platforms — this is a migration engagement, not greenfield design; comfort working from existing BW artifacts as the source of truthStrong attention to semantic accuracy and detail — preserving, not reimagining, business logicComfortable working embedded in an existing mixed Scrum team; seniority to operate autonomously within an established delivery modelRegular use of AI tools to improve productivity, automate or reduce repetitive work, support decision-making, and deliver higher-quality outcomes.Ability to use AI tools responsibly by structuring effective prompts, critically validating outputs, understanding limitations, and taking ownership of the final result.
Nice to have:
Snowflake experience (target platform) — candidates with strong DWH and SAP BW backgrounds but limited Snowflake exposure will be consideredABAP (read-level): ability to interpret existing BW transformation routines is a significant advantagePython for pipeline scripting and automationFamiliarity with dbt Jinja templating and macro developmentExposure to AI-assisted code generation tooling (e.g., Snowflake Cortex)
