As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll be part of one of our 15+ cross-functional feature teams, working on the core systems that power Sendcloud. We integrate numerous carriers and online stores into a fast, intuitive platform used by merchants across Europe. We release early, release often, and automate everything we can—our codebase has high test coverage, our CI pipelines run continuously, and we're always looking to improve performance, reliability, and developer happiness. 🧐 The Role Shape the technical roadmap for impactful, multi-phase projects, delivering customer value iteratively and making sound technical decisions when requirements are open-ended.Scope, plan, and estimate large features and lead projects involving multiple engineers, managing complex technical and strategic trade-offs.Own what you build from code to production—respond with urgency to operational issues, balance delivery against technical debt, and keep systems reliable and scalable.Break complex problems and fuzzy requirements into well-designed, extensible components, and contribute to major architectural decisions and ADRs. 🎯 What you'll do Shape the technical direction of impactful, multi-phase projects and refine roadmaps as they progress, delivering measurable customer value.Lead large features and projects involving multiple engineers, managing ambiguous requirements and complex technical trade-offs.Own your systems from design through production—respond to operational issues with urgency, maintain reliability, and balance new delivery against technical debt.Design and implement distributed, event-driven systems with service-to-service APIs, ensuring patterns and practices that keep them reliable and maintainable.Mentor and upskill engineers on your team and beyond, driving documentation, knowledge sharing, and raising the technical bar.Partner closely with Product, Design, DevOps, QA, and other engineering teams, articulating technical risk clearly to non-technical stakeholders. ✅ What you bring to the table Personally You stay effective in ambiguity and enjoy turning open-ended problems into clear plans.You partner closely with your Product Manager to understand customer problems, shape solutions, and focus on outcomes and impact, not just delivery.You think beyond getting code merged—you consider testing, observability, reliability, maintainability and the operational impact of the systems you build.You're collaborative and genuinely enjoy mentoring and helping other engineers grow.You take ownership—you don't wait to be told what's broken, you find it and fix it, or flag it clearly.You give and receive direct, empathetic feedback, and take ownership of your decisions and mistakes. Professionally You have 5+ years with Python and frameworks like FastAPI or Django (other Python frameworks are a plus).You have extensive experience building and working with REST APIs.You've led and delivered large, complex projects with ambiguous or open-ended requirements.You've built distributed, event-driven systems with service-to-service APIs, and you know the patterns that keep them reliable.You have a deep understanding of relational databases (we use PostgreSQL), including data modelling, indexing, and query optimisation.You're comfortable with non-relational databases and know when to use them.You're comfortable with Linux and the command line.You've worked with at least one of: Docker, AWS, Azure, or GCP.Fluent in English (written and spoken). ❤️ Our Values 💩 No bullshit: Big egos suck.
