Engineering Manager - Stockport - £80-£85k + 10% bonus - 1 day a week onsite / 4 days at home About the Role Overview We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead software engineering teams while remaining actively involved in technical delivery. This is a player-coach role, suited to someone who enjoys developing people, improving engineering practices and contributing to architecture and technical decision-making. You'll be responsible for building high-performing teams, delivering business-critical software and helping create an environment where engineers can do their best work. Responsibilities Lead, coach and develop software engineers across one or more teams.Remain technically involved, contributing to architecture, design reviews and complex technical discussions.Support delivery of business-critical systems, APIs and services.Work closely with Product, Delivery and Architecture teams to define technical solutions.Drive improvements in engineering standards, testing, deployment and operational practices.Identify opportunities for automation and tooling that improve developer productivity.Support recruitment, interviewing and onboarding of new engineers.Mentor engineers at all levels and create clear development pathways.Balance delivery commitments with the long-term health and maintainability of the platform. Required Skills Experience leading software engineering teams in an Agile environment.A genuine player-coach leadership style, with the ability to switch between people leadership and technical contribution.Strong experience designing and delivering scalable distributed systems.Proven track record of coaching engineers and helping them progress in their careers.Experience working with senior stakeholders across business and technology functions.Strong focus on continuous improvement, team culture and engineering quality.
