Mechanical Design Engineer Contractor Location: South London, UK (Onsite) Contract: Initial 12 months (long-term potential) Industry: Biopharmaceutical Equipment / Life Sciences Overview We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of a next-generation bioprocessing platform. The role sits within a global R&D team responsible for the design, development, testing, and industrialisation of innovative hardware and consumable products used within the biopharmaceutical industry. This is a hands-on position requiring a blend of mechanical design expertise, prototype development, testing, and manufacturing transfer experience. Key Responsibilities Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for a brand-new bioprocessing product platform. Create detailed 3D CAD models, drawings and technical documentation. Support prototype development using rapid prototyping and 3D printing technologies. Develop and execute product verification and performance testing activities, including creation of test methods where required.Work closely with manufacturing, sourcing, quality and global engineering teams to transfer designs into production. Support supplier engagement and component selection activities. Contribute to design reviews, problem-solving activities and continuous product improvements. Essential Skills & Experience 5+ years' experience in Mechanical Design, Product Development or R&D Engineering. Strong 3D CAD experience, preferably Creo and Windchill. SolidWorks or Inventor experience will also be considered.Experience designing products through the full development lifecycle, from concept through to manufacturing transfer.Hands-on experience building and evaluating prototypes. Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, mechanical assemblies and general manufacturing methods. Comfortable working within cross-functional global project teams. Highly Desirable Biopharma, biotechnology, medical device, diagnostics or life sciences equipment experience.Experience with: Fluid handling systemsPumps and pump mechanicsFlow sensorsPneumaticsSingle-use/disposable consumable productsBioprocess equipment design Exposure to plastics, injection moulding and consumable product design.
