Senior Backend Engineer

Equal Experts is looking for Senior Backend Engineers to help our clients design, build and operate high-quality software products. You will work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, partnering closely with client stakeholders, engineers, product professionals and quality specialists to solve meaningful business problems. Open to candidates located anywhere in Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. What you’ll do Design, build, test and maintain robust backend services and enterprise applications.Develop simple, coherent solutions that meet user and business needs without unnecessary complexity.Work collaboratively through pairing, knowledge sharing, code reviews and constructive feedback.Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, helping teams make informed decisions.Contribute to the full software delivery lifecycle, from discovery and design through to deployment, monitoring and support.Build automated tests and use them to create confidence in software quality and releases.Apply CI/CD practices to enable frequent, low-risk deployments and reliable recovery when needed.Adapt your approach to the client context, including their technology landscape and agile maturity.Help shape pragmatic technical decisions, with an appreciation of the wider architecture and operational environment.Act with transparency, integrity and a genuine commitment to helping clients succeed. What we’re looking for Broad and varied commercial experience building, maintaining and operating enterprise applications across multiple domains.Deep working knowledge of your primary programming language and its related frameworks and tooling, with practical exposure to other languages and toolsets.Experience with Python is highly desirable and would be an advantage, particularly for developing backend services, APIs or automation tooling.Strong backend engineering fundamentals, including API and service design, data handling, security, performance and maintainability.Experience designing and implementing automated tests as part of a quality-focused engineering practice.A sound understanding of delivery pipelines, CI/CD, production deployment, observability and recovery strategies.A practical understanding of agile principles and the ability to tailor ways of working to a client’s needs.A collaborative mindset, with a willingness to pair, share knowledge and support the growth of others.The ability to explain technical ideas clearly and adjust your communication for different audiences.A flexible, pragmatic approach that balances technical quality with business value and the broader client context.An appreciation of how backend systems fit into wider technical architecture, products and operating environments.Alignment with the Equal Experts values, including transparency, integrity and a strong client-service mindset.
