Role summary: As a Staff Software Engineer at Walmart, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving full lifecycle software development with a focus on cloud-native architecture and AI/ML integration. About the team: At Walmart Global Tech, the team builds scalable, reliable backend platforms supporting the world’s largest retail marketplace. They manage extensive real-time and batch data flows across the Walmart ecosystem, focusing on cloud-native architecture, continuous development, and resilient platform design. Team members collaborate to deliver quality software solutions, conduct design reviews, and drive innovation. Utilizing technologies like Java, Spring Boot, Apache Kafka, and Apache Spark, they develop distributed systems at scale. The team emphasizes technical excellence and data-driven decision-making to meet evolving business needs and maintain high standards in platform engineering. What you'll do: Design and build highly scalable backend microservices using Java and Spring Boot. Architect and implement real-time event-driven systems using Apache Kafka. Develop and optimize large-scale batch and streaming data pipelines using Apache Spark. Drive architecture decisions around scalability, resiliency, observability, and cost efficiency. Lead system design reviews and define engineering best practices for distributed systems. Work closely with Product, Data Science, Platform, and Infrastructure teams to deliver business impact. Optimize system performance through partitioning strategies, caching, async processing, and concurrency tuning. Mentor engineers and act as a technical multiplier across multiple teams. Participate in production incident reviews and drive long-term platform reliability improvements. What you'll bring: Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture, including microservices, containers, and automation to build scalable and resilient platforms. Strong software development skills across the full lifecycle, with experience in coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, and maintenance. Proficiency in API design, software prototyping, and applying design patterns to deliver secure, modular, and maintainable solutions. Demonstrated ability to lead technical reviews, mentor engineers, and influence architectural decisions for long-term sustainability. Data-driven decision-making skills to define metrics, optimize processes, and ensure engineering excellence. Effective collaboration and communication skills to engage cross-functional teams and stakeholders. Adaptability to evolving technologies and commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
