Senior Node.js Engineer | Canada remote T4 Only Location: Fully Remote (Canada) Contract Duration: Through the end of the year with strong possibility of extension Level: Senior Description We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and maintain core data APIs and integrations that power business-critical workflows across the enterprise. You'll work as a senior individual contributor on resilient, standardized, enterprise-grade services that expose data to internal and external consumers at scale. The team standardizes on TypeScript and cloud-native serverless architectures (AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, ApigeeX, AWS CDK) to deliver secure, well-governed, contract-first APIs, and is actively modernizing legacy services into decoupled, cloud-native components. Key responsibilities: • Design & Build Cloud APIs: Engineer low-latency, resilient, RESTful APIs and serverless microservices in TypeScript using AWS Lambda and AWS API Gateway. • Enterprise API Gateway & Routing (ApigeeX): Design, configure, and secure API proxies and routing policies in ApigeeX to handle API governance, security headers, rate limiting, authentication/OAuth2, and enterprise integration boundaries. • API Design & Standardization: Apply contract-first API design principles using OpenAPI/Swagger specifications and canonical data models to ensure consistent request/response schemas across internal and vendor boundaries. • Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK): Write and maintain infrastructure as code in TypeScript using AWS CDK to manage AWS resources (Lambdas, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS, IAM roles). • Vendor Integrations: Build secure, fault-tolerant integrations with external third-party data providers (e.g., LexisNexis, Verisk, HLDI), implementing rate limiting, circuit breakers, caching, and fallback logic. • Modernization & Refactoring: Help migrate legacy Java/BPM services into modern, decoupled TypeScript-based serverless architectures. • Quality & Observability: Write comprehensive automated unit and API integration tests in Jest and Playwright; instrument APIs with DataDog for real-time monitoring, metrics, and alerting. • Engineering Best Practices: Contribute to API design reviews, code reviews, and sprint planning; participate in cross-team PR reviews; and help uphold engineering standards and CI/CD best practices across the domain. Must have skills • AWS Cloud & Serverless — Intermediate to Senior: Deep hands-on experience with AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, IAM, SQS, SNS, and DynamoDB. • TypeScript (Node.js) — Intermediate to Senior: Proficient in modern TypeScript (ES6+), async/await, strict typing, functional paradigms, and the NPM package ecosystem. • API Management & ApigeeX: Experience configuring ApigeeX (or equivalent enterprise API gateways) for API proxies, policy configuration, and OAuth2/JWT. • API Design & REST: Contract-first RESTful API design, OpenAPI 3.0 / Swagger spec creation, RESTful resource modeling, versioning strategies, and status handling. • AWS API Gateway: Designing REST/HTTP APIs, integration request/response mapping, CORS, authorizers, usage plans, and stage deployment. • Infrastructure as Code: AWS CDK written in TypeScript (or Terraform/CloudFormation) for automated cloud deployments. • Testing & CI/CD: Automated unit and API testing using Jest and Playwright/Supertest, integrated into GitHub Actions pipelines. Nice to have: • Data Caching: Redis / Amazon ElastiCache or DynamoDB TTL strategies for caching vendor API payloads. • Observability: DataDog, AWS CloudWatch, or AppDynamics APM setup and dashboard creation. • Java / Spring Ecosystem: Familiarity with Java/Spring Boot to assist with legacy code analysis during modernization efforts. • Insurance / FinServ Domain: Knowledge of Third-Party Data prefill, VIN lookup, MVR, CLUE, or credit scoring integrations.
