As a Senior AI Systems Engineer, you'll work across Retail claims and insurance operations by building intelligent systems that automate and augment complex work across claims and insurance operations. Working directly with business stakeholders, you'll turn real-world challenges into practical AI solutions that improve customer outcomes and create meaningful business impact. This is an opportunity to work on some of the most interesting AI challenges in the industry. From helping customers recover faster after accidents and natural disasters to optimising operational processes at scale, you'll design, build and evaluate AI systems that make a tangible difference to the lives of our customers and communities. Working alongside engineers, product leaders, architects, risk specialists and Responsible AI experts, you'll help shape how AI is safely and effectively adopted across one of Australasia's leading insurers. This is a permanent full-time role based in Gadigal Country (Darling Park 2, Sydney), Naarm (Melbourne) or Meanjin (Brisbane). What You'll Do Design, build and evaluate AI agents, decision-support tools and AI-enabled systems that solve complex business challenges across claims and insurance operations.Lead the technical delivery of AI prototypes, pilots and domain solutions, defining appropriate autonomy boundaries, evaluation approaches and engineering controls.Work directly with business stakeholders to understand problems, identify opportunities and translate ideas into scalable AI-powered solutions.Develop robust testing, evaluation and assurance approaches that assess accuracy, reliability, quality, customer impact and business outcomes.Design AI systems with accountability, explainability, privacy, security and governance built in from the start.Mentor engineers, review solutions and contribute reusable patterns that help scale AI capability across the organisation. What You'll Bring 5+ years' experience in AI engineering, machine learning engineering, software engineering, data science or a related technical discipline.Demonstrated experience designing and building AI systems, intelligent automation solutions, AI-powered applications or decision-support platforms including both prototyping quickly to test ideas with the business and shipping LLM-based or agentic system into production.Strong engineering foundations across software development, architecture, testing, integration and modern delivery practices, including fluent use of AI coding tools with the discipline to review and verify their output.Experience working with large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), orchestration frameworks, APIs and AI system design patterns.Confidence navigating ambiguity and working with the probabilistic nature of AI systems to deliver practical outcomes including designing evaluations such as golden datasets, test cases, regression testing and quality thresholds for release.Ability to design AI systems for regulated or customer-impacting environments, with human accountability, autonomy boundaries, explainability, auditability, privacy and escalation built in.Experience mentoring junior engineers and reviewing designs and code to lift engineering quality.Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work closely with business teams to solve real-world problems.
